A teaspoon of Chia seed will help to counter act the diet and nicotine.

It's obviously best not to smoke.

Chia slows the absorbtion of sugar and dumps it in the waste stream rather the blood stream. It also gives one lots of energy. So if he decides to quit smoking, he will be able to exercise the weight away and feel better.
Tell him his sex life will improve.

From a 61 yr old male Diabetic II who does take a med for it and is 20 lbs over...........good luck cause he will need it! That is just fact from myself and (most likely) any doctor.
I use to smoke (not much though at a pack/half a week), stopped and started "dipping"/chewing (Skoal) when I was in rodeo,
again, not much (a can every two weeks) BUT was able to STOP both and darn glad that I did!! Been smoke free 11 yrs, "dip" free 5 yrs. Don't watch my diet as much as I should, but sure watch the amount of sugar and sodium that is in things wife and I buy. When I told my new doctor last Friday that I use Spenda in coffee instead of sugar, she smiled and said "great". I also need to get more exercise and that will come when the boating season here starts up again.
Since I was a minimal smoker and "dipper", it was fairly easy for me to stop......thank God!! Now, eating right and losing weight is much, much harder, but wife and are going to do......New Years Resolution!!

He sneaks and smokes and changes the subject/gets defensive when I try to talk to him about it. He has it in his head that something is going to get him. I think the addiction to nicotine is something that many people cannot escape. All it took was stress from his job and he went back to the cigarettes.

Good luck!

Indeed.

Some people don't want to change any part of their lives in order to lengthen their time on this earth. They won't do it for themselves and they won't do it for their family members. Sad really.

I can relate to this thread, you know what he should be doing but getting him to realise is another issue.

My mum bless her she has changed three items, granulated sugar to splenda or similar, lard (animal lard) to trex (vegetable lard), not sure what you guys call it, its a block of solid fat, and she has replaced butter to originally Flora margarine now she uses Stork margarine. She loves a little tipple of Malibu with her reckoning with the other changes she has made its okay for her to have the odd glass or so of Malibu.

The doctor told her to eat plenty of fruit and veg, no problem for mum except her potassium level is too high now.

She made her own mince pies at Christmas she bought a jar of mince meat suitable for diabetics. Putting aside the pastry, the mince meat is dried fruit and high in potassium.

I have come to the conclusion my mum is well into her 70s there are so many things that could be the cause, if you do this or that - what the hell if she enjoys her food and drink then she is enjoying her life. However I would have a different view for a younger person.

It is frustrating, when we know by changing their lifestyle could improve their health.

My advice to you would be to chip away at him, like suggesting he cuts down don't nag otherwise you will both become miserable.

Doesn't your Husband see a Endocrinologist (diabetic Doctor) ?
All diabetics should be seeing their Dr. every 3 months.
Smoking is bad for a non-diabetic, but it's really a death sentence for a diabetics to smoke.

Plain & simple...
If your Husband likes to have sex...then he has 2 choices sex...or cigarettes. He can't have both.
Cigarettes destroy especially a diabetics vascular system.
Anywhere the blood has to travel to.
The heart.
The brain.
The penis.
The kidneys.
If he keeps smoking he will cut his life short, that is a fact.
If he enjoys sex...diabetic men & even some woman lose all feeling when it comes to enjoying sex. They can't reach a climax. That's what diabetes does. Add smoking to that, it's even worse.

I wish you the best of luck trying to help your Husband.
He really does need to talk about this with a specialist.

I am 62 and smoked since I was 14. I quit smoking three years ago. Eleven years ago I was diagnosed with diabetes. When I was in the military I took care to keep trim. I had to. Since I retired from the military I have gained weight. I take meds for cholesterol. My wife of 42 years also smoked, we quit together.

My diabetes has been under control most of the time... Fell off the wagon a few times... Eat a healthy diet, exercise and maintain a proper weight. I'm working on the weight part again...

Good luck.

Rich

As an ex smoker and a diabetic I have to say you can never "force" someone to stop smoking. They have to want to. The only thing that got me to stop was when we adopted our first child. I did not want to be a smoking Mom. I knew all the dangers and didn't stop. I had tried several times and never quit for long.

It is very hard. Your hubby has smoked for years so it will be hard to stop. It can be done!!! My Mom smoked for years and I mean years. Unfortunately for her she now has severe emphysema and that is what got her to quit. Now she can barely breathe.

I would not nag him. I would however talk to him and tell him you love him and are very concerned. Let him know you want him around for a lot longer. If that doesn't work then I would not say anything anymore. I hope something wakes him up. Again I stress nagging does not work. Saying many times stop does not work.

I pray he will stop and I'm sorry you are having this problem with him. Hugs!!!

I haven't read all the responses, but, my Dad got type 2 diabetes w/in the past couple of years. He smoked for SIXTY years!!!!! 16-76. He quit last year when 1/4 of one of his lungs was removed (cancerous tumors) . I was scared to death. I am soooo proud of him for quitting cold turkey like he did. =)

My hubby's Dad chain smoked for 45-50 years on & off. More on then off. He totally quit when he moved from PA to San Fran area, & LOVED it there, but his wife (stepmom) refused to move, so, he moved back to PA & fell back into the smoking lifestyle. Not making excuses, just saying some situations are more favorable than others for not smoking. His Dad had bypass, double, triple, & quad surgeries & had 3 heart attacks, the 1st at 25!!!!!! After the quad surgery in, it was either June 03 or 04 (I was preggo, but I was preggo both years lol) , the doc that was flown in from the Cleveland Clinic (obviously a big deal) to Pittsburgh for FIL's surgery told him, very strongly, he was going to die & no one would treat him until he quit, &, he did. He still does oxygen treatments to this day w/ this machine. I'm proud of him & smil as well, she quit when he did. I have never smoked, so, I do not know the addiction.

My Dad has lost weight since developing diabetes. He was kinda stocky, so, he looks pretty darn good for almost 78, I think. Good luck, & I am sorry for any crash comments. I wouldn't trade my own hubby for a 'gazillion' dollars.

On a side note, we are taking our 6 & 7 yo's to Disney in Cali for the 1st time, & my DAD (total homebody, can sit in his recliner for hours doing whatever lol) nudged my Mom to come & join in the fun when I told them. Total shocker. Not sure if it has to do w/ the 'new' Dad or not, but, I like it. =)
