From day 1 of being told my blood sugar was very high and I was a type 2 I have been on 2000 mg of Metformin and both fast and slow insulin. Now we have added Victoza. So I am doing 35 units of Lantus in the morning and bedtime. A 1:5 ratio of Novolog whenever I eat. Victoza every night too. I try to eat well. I have lost 60 pounds, need to go down about 40 more. My numbers are crazy. They range 220-300 with a crazy 48-60 in there about once a week. I go back to my DR Monday, but I don't even know what to ask her about. It seams nothing is working and I am getting so tired of 6 injections a day and at least 4 finger sticks aday too. I am only 35. I don't want this to be my life. If 60 pounds down doesn't help why try to go down 40 more.

Normally Type I is a person born with diabetes.

As far as your numbers really bouncing, mine did too. When you are pushing hard to drop weight things can be crazy. I have what is called, "Brittle Diabetes". That means that my blood sugar can slam one way or the other, instantainiously, even though I maintain the same diet, the same meds, etc.

I will fix a meal that is too large. I dole out my portions and put the rest in the fridge. Check my blood sugar 5 hours later and I'm 80. The next day I'll have the same breakfast, the leftovers at lunch and when I check my blood sugar 5 hours later I'm over 300.

I had one doctor that told me that was normal for somebody that was trying to diet. That doctor was also Type II. A few months later when my weight had got down to a plateau, like it will, my numbers leveled out. My system wasn't crazy trying to make up for this, not getting that, etc. I stayed at that plateau for a couple months (on purpose) and let everything settle down and then started cutting my portions again. Since then the numbers have settled down and make sense with what I'm eating, doing, and not doing.

Stick with it but even diet, like chocolate, has to be done in moderation. That's diet, I don't know about the band, whip ties, knots and such.

By the way. I weigh less then HALF of what I weighed in 2005.

I'm not sure I agree. Maybe some are born with diabetes but most type 1 don't show symptoms till childhood (hence the term juvenile diabetes) or even into adulthood.
I became a type 1 at 47 after 3 lifethreatening attacks of pancreatitis within 18 months. caused by hormone replacement therapy.

I think way more than you would think become type 1 after some damage or injury to pancreas.

Congrats on losing 60 lbs. Something to be very rpoud of and even if you still have diabetes and it's problems, you are way better off without all those lbs.

have you tried insulin pump? very convenient and after initial reaction of feeling like a bionic person, you get used to it.

I had an appt this past Monday but do to an ice storm (I am in South Carolina) the office closed. I just want to get off these shots. I thought by losing the weight I could, but I guess not. I may have to give the pump a second thought. I have a 2 yr old and I worry about her pulling it out. My insurace will pay for 80% of the pump but I think that would still leave me about $2,000 to pay.

There is something called Type 1.5 or Lada. The Other Diabetes: LADA, or Type 1.5 | Diabetes Forecast Magazine. I hope this link works. I'm terrible at this stuff!

My sister who is in her early 50's developed this. Our whole family was shocked!!! She is the most fit of us all. The doctors think hers developed after having a virus. I wish you the best!

Oh and many people have not heard of this. I hadn't and I've been a Type I for 44 yrs.

Dear SuzyQ123,

It seems to me you have some serious diabetes problems if you're taking so much medication, and different types of insulin on top of that! If your blood sugars are bouncing from 48 - very low to the point of dangerous! - to over 300 - very high and very bad! Sounds like something has to be done!

Are you seeing a regular doctor, or do you have an endocrinologist? I recommend you see an endocrinologist: they are the real experts. If you still need to lose weight, then by all means lose it. How long have you been diabetic?

Check out this site: Diabetes Forums - What's New

For me, as an overweight person, I underwent bariatric surgery this past Dec. 20th, 2010 and now my diabetes is in total remission. For a few weeks now I am off all diabetes medications including insulin. In 4 months I have lost 65 pounds and only have another 15 more to lose to reach my goal. The procedure I underwent is called Gastric By-Pass 'Roux-En-Y' and nearly 90% of diabetics have their diabetes "reversed" by this procedure.

Wishing you the best of luck!!!

What insulin pump are you looking at or does your doctor recommend? I'm sure prices may have changed since I switched pumps in 2008, but my Minimed was $6500. 80% would leave you with $1300, and Medtronic will work with you and set up a payment plan. Still quite a bit of money but it beats the costs of complications, right?

I have a 9 month old, and if my tubing is out she tends to want to pull at it. The good thing is it is not easily pulled out. Even when I'm switching my site out, I wince sometimes because it's stickier than a band aid. Also it's pretty easy to keep the pump and tubing out of sight. They have belt clips for them but I usually just keep mine in my pocket and all the tubing tucked into my jeans.

Did you change your diet when you got diagnosed????? How many carbs a day (per meal) are you eating?

Did your doctor have your insulin levels taken??? Did you do a GITT (Glucose insulin tolerance test), this would be very helpful to doctor skilled in interpreting this type test??????

The levels you have are not good.
