Just listening to my favorite weekend program on PRP regenerative work. The MD who spends an hour on the radio is very into healthy living, cutting out sugarS and keeping weight under control. Extra weight on the body does us no good.

Thinking about my father who lived to almost 96, he drank alcohol and beer all his life, even had a couple beers a few weeks before he died. Ate TONS of sugars (sweets) and major loads of pasta and breads...

Diabetes was NEVER mentioned in those days...sugar was talked about like "he/she has sugar condition"...

Can someone live a long life with diabetes and not know it? This man was hardly sick in his life and then stuff happened in his late 60's...diverticulitis but he made it back to life with my mom's care. Mom ate tons of carbs and sugars too, but never drank alcohol but didn't consume like my father..

The PRP MD asks everyone who calls in what is your age and your Weight. The MD says it's Veggies, Protein and Water....and eliminating sugars majorally.

In those "old days" "sugar condition" was diabetes. My grandmother used to always talk about her sugar being up or down or whatever. She was diabetic.

And yes, it's possible for someone to live a long life with diabetes, if it is well controlled.

It's also possible that neither of your grandparents had diabetes or the genetics involved.

One doesn't "catch" diabetes simply because they eat or drink certain things.

So what you are saying in today's world, it's all by lab numbers on whether one is diabetic.

I'm sure for my parents' lives there were never labs done for "sugar"...and they ate lots of sugar/carbs and were never really sick people. So one has to have diabetes in their gene line?

It's also possible to eat and drink the "wrong" things, live a long life AND never suffer any health problems and die from old age AKA "natural causes".

There is no one thing that will cause diabetes. Generally, yes if there is diabetes in your family history, you have an increased risk for diabetes. That's true for many diseases (heart disease, some cancers, etc). Some ethnic groups have higher risk for diabetes (Pacific Islanders come to mind).

But the important thing to note is that some people can eat anything they want, live on sugar/carbs, beer, alcohol, cigarettes, chocolate, beef, eggs, bacon, ANYTHING and never have a sick day in their lives. Some people can't do that. No one can point to any one thing and say "if you do this, you WILL get this". Life doesn't work that way.

If your parents doctor suspected any problems he likely would have checked for diabetes, but saw no reason to check. Although, I do believe that it is a standard blood test for everyone of a certain age.

And yes, diabetes is diagnosed through blood glucose levels and blood tests. As far as I know, it always has been.

No. It's a misconception many doctors still harbor, that if you don't have a family history of diabetes, you won't get it. Some patients with pre-diabetic symptoms get dismissed and told they're "fine" when the doc finds out there's no history of diabetes. For that matter, there are still an alarming number of doctors and nurses around who insist "there's no such thing as pre-diabetes. You either have diabetes or you don't."

I don't understand why there are so many doctors who are so passive about diabetes prevention and diagnosing pre-diabetes in patients when there's been so much media attention to this, since the 1990's. It's very difficult to find a doctor to take one seriously when one complains of blood sugar symptoms.

I can cut out all sugar, corn syrups, starches and eat only proteins, vegs, and fats and still have triglycerides +700. I can be feel the blood sugar by my degree of flushing and the need to pee.

Took me 10 years to get my doctor to recognize that I had a problem. And another 5 years to get a hormone test-apparently abnormal since doctor called to see me before my regularly schedule visit.

161#, 66inch, excercise daily.

Have you tried to cut out all grains? You did not mention the grains. My trigs went from around 400 to around 120 with a no grain low carb diet. Also, have you considered changing doctors? He is/was not apparently taking good care of you.

My last tris were 100 and I've CUT OUT grains majorally. So so many will not change and think their drugs are their friends.
