Just out of curiosity, does anyone know if there are certain exercises that are better for diabetes than other exercises OR is it just as long as you exercise & lose weight? Thanks!
At a presentation I went to a few months back, the physician who was speaking said 30 minutes of aerobic activity daily is suggested, and said walking is very good.

Great, thanks a lot! I love walking...I never was the jogging/running type anyway.
Walking is good, but my doctor also recommended some strength training, as well. It helps your body respond better to insulin, improves the way it handles sugar, helps with weight loss and lowers the risk of heart disease.
It doesn't mean I need to become a gym rat, but hand-held weights, resistance bands, etc. can be beneficial.

Building lean muscle mass at the gym + cardio. Increasing lean muscle mass really makes a big difference as to how well your system metabolizes starches/sugars. It really does decrease your insulin resistance.
Hi Forever Blue,
One thing to consider is how well controlled you are- in other words I have diabetes2 but never had concerns or issues before, while or after exercising. Other folks needed to eat and check levels before/ or after. Some had issues during exercise even if it was mild.
You need to start there and ask your diabetes nurse educator or doctor about your situation. Other great places for info related to that issue are legitimate places like the American Diabetes Association or others. Again- it's not just about losing weight but to be safe in how you do it. Step 1 is about how you are controlled now before you do any exercise (which is a must, but safely). It is also smart if you take an exercise class / train with someone to let them know what to do and symptoms of hypoglycemia.
By the way I feel strongly that the diabetes association has an annual walk/run most places, maybe that's a good goal! Whatever you do once you know where you stand to start, begin low and slow in your workout and build from there. I test normal now.

Thanks a lot. I should have added that I have PRE-diabetes, but whatever it is for regular diabetes will benefit me too, I'm sure.
