I love the crystal light individual packets. They come in a variety of flavors and travel well so they can always be added to a glass/bottle of water when you are bored with plain water. There are also some great tasting South Beach powders but I cant always find them in the stores. Arizona tea comes in a tasty peach - the diet version has Splenda in it and you would never know its diet.
First of all, stay away from fruit juices such as orange juice which is very very high in sugars. That is the first thing you give a hypoglycemic who is having a low blood sugar attack.
I'm gonna disagree with many of the folks here and state that sugar-free diet sodas are a better choice for diabetics than regular soda. Diet Coke is always a better choice than regular Coke. However, since they taste sweet, "diet" sodas make people crave more sweets which is not good. I gently weened myself off all sodas and flavor my water with "Crystal Lite" type sugar free flavorings or I make sugar free ice tea, especially sugar free iced green tea.
There is a difference between diabetes Type 1 and diabetes Type 2.
So, It's better to ask Nutrition Specialist about what suitable for your mother to drink and avoid.
Don't forget to tell your mother do regular exercises but, without much effort.
I agree, soda in any form is bad. I try to drink water with lemon, but if I have to have something different I do like the flavored teas or unsweetned tea with stevia in it. I only use "Sweet Leaf stevia" brand as it is the only one without maltodextrin in it which can also raise blood sugar, i also use it in my coffee. It comes in powder or liquid drops which i carry in my purse. Fruit juice is just pure sugar and should also be avoided.
No wonder I'm drinking more diet soda than ever.
I quit sodas almost altogether, but have recently started to like the taste of diet, so I guess-eh, why not.. not every day but at least 3 a week.
Im not a diabetic, but have been trying to lose weight.
I think I crave more sweets when I drink diet sodas.
Gotta get back into the filtered water kick....
I actually craved water for a while, soda has seemed to make me dislike water....

I have noticed a LOT of diabetics drink a LOT of diet sodas....
I drink alot of water and that is my main drink. I do drink a very small glass of OJ with calcium each AM. When I say I have OJ I mean only a drop or so. I would never even drink a half glass of a small glass of OJ, unless my sugar had dropped dangerously low. I have a small glass of Diet Cranberry Pomegrante a few times a week. I do not drink soda or coffee or tea. For me its all that water and its been this way for decades.
Any diet soda, tea, coffee, green tea etc.
No milk or fruit based, as these have a lot of 'natural' sugars in, that are just as bad.
People think they're better because they're all natural, but they're all full of sugar.
