I have heard from many, many people that one key element in successful weight loss and maintenance is to keep a daily food journal. I'm sure most of us don't take the time to do so, considering that you need to write down everything you've eaten and then figure up calories, fat grams, etc...that can become a time consuming thing.
Anyways, I found this great app for my iPod that has really helped me in my weight loss endeavors. It's called "MyFitnessPal" and it's a free app from the Apple Apps store or on the Android market. It's really easy to set up. After creating your profile, you tell it what your starting weight is, what your goal weight is, and the app pretty much does the rest. It tells you how many calories, fat grams, cholesterol, sugar, etc.. you should be consuming each day in order to reach your goal. All you have to do is log your consumption and exercise. It really makes keeping a food journal extremely easy and fast. The food database is large, so you can pretty much find just about anything you've consumed, and if it's not in there, you add it in or you can find something that is close enough. I've lost five pounds in about the last couple of weeks and I think keeping the food journal has really helped in that weight loss.
I use this app too. It was critical to my 17 pounds weight loss over 20 weeks. And I was ever so pleased at how extensive and comprehensive their food list was. Excellent app.
MyFitnessPal is a good app but personally I prefer the LoseIt app more. I've lost 9 lbs in about 3 weeks using it. Would have been 10 but I had a birthday splurge day with my son and gained back a pound I had lost.
