Sugar is a MUCH bigger culprit than fat. And I agree about the calories. Bottom line is that fat satiates you and sugar does not. Sugar messes you big time. Fat does not. Drop the sugar and replace with fat. He can get rid of those sugar laden cranberries (do you know how much sugar is needed to make a cranberry even palatable?) and eat a strip of bacon, or put whole cream or half and half on his oatmeal instead.
I eat bacon, steak, avocados, nuts, olive oil, 1/2 in my coffee. I am NEVER hungry. Half the time I have to remind myself to eat. I was a big doubter on the whole carb thing for a long time, but now that I realize the real enemy is sugar I eat less and feel better and I have lost weight which was not my intention when I got rid of the sugar.
I agree regarding the sugar, and even the fat being good as a whole. However, complex carbs are also very important, and do nothing even close to the same to your blood sugar levels as sugar does. Oatmeal, rice, potatoes, etc.
I think there needs to be a balance of complex carbs along with the fat, which you didn't mention anything about them at all (not sure if it was because you were focusing just on fat and sugar, or insinuating something else)

Actually there doesn't. The body does not needs carbs to survive. That said it is wise to have a balanced diet. White rice is worthless, and potatoes are not especially good, but they are not horrible. Sweet potatoes are a much better option, as well as wild rice and quinoa.

Sweet potatoes and quinoa also play a part in my overall diet. In fact, I just at some mashed sweet potatoes today for lunch.
