Crunches are just one aspect of working abs and core. There are a lot of other moves that are more effective.
Here is a hint, once a move becomes easy where you can do a bunch of them, they are no longer effective.
Lets be clear on this FACT as well - crunches DO NOT reduce body fat. Eating less reduces body fat.

How so? In order to get a 'six pack' one needs to focus on diet first.
Crunches are not all that effective unless you vary them. I rarely do crunches but my abs are in great shape because I do a lot of other core/ab moves.
If you really want to strengthen your abs why not learn other exercises you can do to get you there instead of focusing on something that will not?
I disagree, he is correct. What everyone needs to KNOW and remember -- when we're talking about getting great abs, everyone needs to realize that what one first needs to do is focus on their diet to help get rid of the fat that is covering up the abs. Then as you are getting closer to that goal, focus on whatever exercises will tone the abs, so that when they are revealed, they look ripped.
What people think of as ripped abs is simply enough abdominal muscle hypertrophy (size development) combined with a low enough body fat to be able to see the abdominal muscles underneath.
BTW, physiologically, there is no exercise you can do to "tone" your muscles. Same with "define". All skeletal muscle, including those of the abdominal area, can only do three things in terms of appearance... they can get bigger (hypertrophy), they can get smaller (atrophy), or they can stay the same. That's it. There's no such thing as toning or defining.
