Lots of speculation here but to me, it's simple: Lack of portion control.
People may claim it to be the fat in our foods but the French use cream sauces and the Chinese use plenty of oil.
People may claim it to be alcohol but the French drink wine and the Germans drink lager
People may claim it is a busy schedule but our schedules aren't that much different from those that live in a capitalist economy in the other parts of the world
People may claim it is the junk food but there are actually more McDonalds per square mile in China and Japan than in the US.
over worked unappreciated unloved unhappy people need to eat? exercise will not erase mean streets?
The best way that I know of to make the mean streets kindler & friendlier streets, for those of us who care, is to be kinder & friendlier ourselves. The mean streets will be come kindlier & friendlier streets one person at a time. Maybe people will then eat less!
I think alot of good points have been made. America has largely become an auto/suburban based society and thus a breeding ground for obesity.
I would also add that, more and more, we are witnessing personal responsibility being jettisoned as obesity is claimed to be a disease, not the consequence of an array of negative actions on the part of the fat person in question.

Agreed! Classifying Obesity as a disease is just another big pharma scam to get more people addicted to their expensive, dangerous drugs, so that people do not have to shoulder the burden of personal responsibility. Taking a pill is much easier, not to mention, more lucrative for big pharma.
I don't think its Big Pharma so much as the notion of personal responsibility is going the way of the dodo bird. There are numerous other examples outside of health.
Everyone makes some very good points. Obesity is NOT a disease!! I cannot beleive people are trying to categorize it as such. Its just an easy out for those who would rather make an excuse for their being obese instead of just eating right and working out and also an excuse for pharm co's to market their drugs to these people. Wow. There are diseases that can lead to obesity (diabetes, schizophrenia) but obesity itself is NOT a disease.
on overeating
i am beginning to wonder----
is "be tough, suck it up",
my best coaching for somebody in the 10th round

1) people drive everywhere or sit in front of the tv/computer
2)food has lots of synthetic hormones, which make you fat
3)too much processed food
4)too much stress, which releases cortisol, which makes you gain weight
5)sleep deprivation, see #4
Solution? Walk more, eat organic, eat less, sleep more and relax!
1) We have to drive to get everywhere. We build neighborhoods and roads that lead to schools without sidewalks. We build giant shopping centers on huge main roads that would be deadly for a pedestrian to cross. Even in places with sidewalks, it is not always practical to walk because no one else around you is walking. This scares me from walking outside sometimes as a single female and I opt to get in my car and drive 1 mile instead of walking it. Also, everyone is glaring at you from their cars as you cross the intersection - I have felt danger at times when walking because of inattentive drivers who aren't expecting pedestrians. When I lived in Buffalo, four kids got killed by a driver in a suburban town one winter when they were forced to walk on the road. The snowbirds had left for Florida and didn't arrange to have their sidewalks shovelled for months making it impossible to walk past their houses with 2 feet of snow blocking the path and the poor kids didn't have any other choice.
2) Supersize portions. I can't even order a small coffee at the Dunkin Donuts at LaGuardia & JFK Airports anymore; they have discontinued it and a medium cup is the new small. When my boyfriend & I went to Toronto and ordered medium coffees at Tim Hortons, we had to double check our orders because the cups they gave us for the mediums in Canada were the cups that US locations used for their small size. The Canadian small size used to be called an extra-small in the US, but they discontinued that, gee I wonder why. I end up ordering things from the kids and senior menus at fast food places because I don't need the excess calories from the regular menu. I ordered a half salad at CPK one day it was huge making me wonder how many horses the full order could feed. I could go on, but I really think one of the main reasons for balooning waistlines is our inability to control our portions.
