Sure you can lose weight on them, and you may even be able to maintain them for awhile, but eventually life is going to get in the way and the diet gets blown.
Why not just eat from all the food groups and use moderation and common sense? The weight may come off slower - but there will be no deprivation.
I think the Keto / Adkins and Paleo diet platforms are great ways to lose a bunch of weight rapidly

After the weight is at a level you are happy with then you can reconform your eating habits that MAINTAINS that weight level. As you no longer NEED to LOSE weight ... just maintain your current weight

its all about being able to change and adapt to what suits you best.

That is what I have done. I am currently in a stall after 40lb drop and maintaining my current weight as I have done for about 5 weeks and then I may make another push to drop another 15-20 lbs to get to my target weight of around 210

I am a 56yo male 6'1 and muscular athletic build so I do not look FAT anymore ... but I am still at least 15-20 lbs over weight. I will never be skinny as I have an athletes build with broad shoulders and muscular frame

I'm in a low sodium diet for medical reasons
1000-1500 mgs a day max

I miss eating out so badly
I basically can't eat out at all anymore and even if I do it's not worth it because I have to order lo-so

I have no room for cheating at all

So it works for you. As I said it does work for some folks. It does not however work for everyone. I did it once for 6 months and it was horrible. I did lose weight, and in the beginning I did have energy. But then I had leg cramps so I had to take supplements. My workouts sucked. I got so sick of eating fat. It became gross. For me. That is my story. Yours is different. So do not assume since it works for you that it must work for everyone. That is not how any diet or way of eating works. It is all individual. There is also a very high failure rate for Keto simply because people want to get back to eating from all the food groups.

I'm really wondering if you can simply "go off Keto" once you hit your goal and the weight doesn't come right back. If your body doesn't remain in a ketogenic state, then whatever benefits the diet had will be lost. I've never been a fan of taking weight off rapidly because it's not sustainable. I don't want to be forced into sticking to a certain lifestyle in order to keep the weight off. To me, it's better to lose 1-2 lbs per week eating from a variety of food groups. The only guideline that I have is sticking within my caloric range. That's it.

Trying to substitute all sorts of things so that they're keto-friendly, or simply not eating certain things is absolutely not a lifetime choice for me and it would just lead to regain down the road.

For many people I know, keto wasn't to lose weight fast, it was because other diets, including moderate eating, had failed. I don't know anyone who tried keto first.

For me, I had already pared down my food choices many years earlier due to allergies so I really don't care what I eat. It's just not that important, just trying to stay healthy.

I've been switching-off between low-carb (max 40-50 grams carb daily) and keto (under 10 grams carb daily), for the longest time. Both seem to work quite well, with regular low-carb having a lot more flexibility.

I don't seen to have any noticeble weight-gain or glaring problems when I cycle back and forth between the two.....LOL, as long as I am not eating a whole chicken for dinner every day, kinda keep an eye on total calories.

I am doing WW so there isn't a food I can't have as long as it's with in the plans points. I do eat certain trigger foods in moderation and try hard to stay away from fast foods with the occasional Chinese or pizza take out and maybe 3 times a year taco bell. I will admit I cheat. I have given up soda both regular and diet and I don't miss it one bit. it's going on 4 years now.

I'm giving up the salt shaker to handle the sodium. if you miss that flavor, like if food is too bland, get some no-salt lemon pepper! it will give you that acidy taste that salt used to give you.. its pretty good for a replacement. Try it you might have to get it in a place that sells no-salt spices.

but as to butter, i love the flavor on some bland foods but it has the most dense calorie per teaspoon for a zero nutrient food. (120 cal a tsp for zero nutrient benefit).
Me too, with the butter...but I really must confess that the longest amount of time I've been on a diet is 3 (three) hours.
