I like wheat, rye, and Pumpernickel bread too much to successfully do the Atkins diet. I do not eat white bread or rolls. I icombine parts of the Atkins diet and the South Beach diet.

what works for one does not always work for others.

YMMV.

High Protein Diets are not good for you...

They may not be good for YOU, but I lost weight, kept it off, my blood pressure and cholesterol went down, and I feel better as a result of having been on a high protein diet.
I'm not going to say that " everyone should be on a high protein diet", but there are many thousands of people like myself who have better health after being on a high protein diet for several years, and I am my own evidence. A statement from the American Heart Association is not going to convince me otherwise. For some people, I'm sure that being on a high protein diet would not be healthy or feel good for them. For others like myself, no other diet worked.

If you lost wt that is great... but the long term effects are not a perk...
www.thedoctorwillseeyounow.com provides this info about high protein... and it also contributes to your chances of getting cancer later... the older you are the risks increase...

The typical American diet, as we said earlier, is already providing plenty of protein. There is no value in adding even more protein to that amount, since protein cannot be stored in the body and the excess is eliminated in urine and feces.

When people start consuming too much protein (over 2.0 g/kg/d), the extra protein can become a stressful stimulus for the kidney. This is even more of a concern as we get older and our organs are less efficient and effective.

Very high levels of dietary protein have also been correlated with increased urinary calcium excretion. The loss of calcium through urine could potentially be harmful for bone turnover, with the added risk of osteoporosis. Finally, protein requires vitamin B6 in order to be metabolized and ultimately utilized in the body. Very high levels of dietary protein increase the requirement for this B vitamin.

and here is some more sites to check out...if you don't think the American Heart Assoc knows what they are actually talking bout... Personally I wouldn't risk the damage to my kidneys, bones, heart... to get thin fast... I would just change my diet to eat good fats and more fruits/veg/whole grains/lower fat protiens... healthy lifestyle changes that promote healthy organ function....

2.0 grams of protein per kg of weight per day does seem like an awful lot, and not even the Atkins diet or Protein Power recommends that much.
I think a lot of people have only read negative things about the so called 'high protein" diets, without actually reading the books suggesting those diets...
The typical American diet is about 55 % carbs, 30% fat, and 15% protein.
The typical Atkins dieter is more along the lines of 60% fat, 15% carbs, and 25% protein,
so there is an increase in total protein, but not to the extent that it approaches anywhere near 2 grams per kilo of body weight per day...
But if you want to talk about fat, that's a whole nother story..I don't think Atkins puts enough emphasis on eating healthy fats, but some of the other low carb diets do.

I tried Atkins last year... it was so hyped up to me and I wasn't educated enough on the diet... I ate only egg whites, turkey/chicken breast, lots of veg and I was craving fruits so I added berries... but I got very sick in the two weeks I did it. I talked to my Dr and he told me to immediately STOP. He explained all of the health risk involved... all are listed above... I am just warning the OP prior to getting themself ill...
One problem is that people don't always follow the exact diet...it even tells you not to eat low foods in the plan... They load up on fatty meats, creamy full fat dressings and cheeses, and think that is alright for the diet. That is not a heart healthy diet... but they think because they are eating protein they are fine.

Actually it's a high fat and not high protein if followed properly.

Default Atkins

Well I find it funny that my son in law is a Heart Doctor and has done Atkins for 3 yrs, I also saw the new study that just came out and more people lost on Atkins in same time period as they did on Low Fat or Mediterr.

I think a person has to make their own choices and what works for them, I lost 40 lbs on Atkins and kept it off for a couple of years, cholestrol went down as did everything else and I felt better than I had in along time. I am going back on it this week, some people just think you eat a pound of bacon on it and thats not true, actually you are better off on Atkins is you eat mostly Chicken and Seafood and Fish but the good thing is if you like steak then you can have it, Atkins doesnt tell you though to eat all the fat you can, people have to use their heads when dieting.

When I did it before I acutally ate cantalope a lot and eggplant and zucchini, squash, green beans and cole slaw I made with splenda and mayo. I also made myself pudding with real cream that I whipped and then added dry sugar free pudding to along with some splenda and then ate it with cool whip on it. I lost 40 lbs in 3 mths.

my hubby lost 20 lbs on atkins. i found them. i keep them close around my middle in case he wants them back, but so far he doesn't miss them...
presently trying to outrun them but they keep up with me...dang it. next step is to starve them out...well starve is a pretty strong word, its more like i will sternly threaten to stop eating fast food one fine morning!!! l know i can drive right by those golden arches without so much as a 'how-u-do', but i don't. i know i can make a salad and take it to work with me, but i don't. i know i don't have to have a steak dinner, but i do.
are you noticing a thread here? i know what to do, eat smarter, move harder, lose the larder. and the moment i can't stand it a minute longer i will. the devil is in the details: when i want my health more than i want to whine about my weight, i will do what i know i should do. but that wasn't your question was it?
