Yes, I know ricotta has twice the calories, but that's just wrong.
I remember years ago an Italian friend went somewhere out in the Midwest and came back horrified because they actually made lasagna with cottage cheese instead of ricotta--in a restaurant!
Mine is bread. Really carbs in general, but I could eat bread many times a day and it wrecks my BG. So, I will sometimes buy the low carb breads. I can live without rice, potatoes etc., and have gotten used to not eating pasta. But have yet to get to that point with bread.

Ah, my carb is potatoes. Pasta I can take or leave. Same with rice. I do love bread, but I have learned to say no. Potatoes...ah, mashed potatoes are my favorite food on the planet.
Food journals are worth doing. Most people don't realize the amount of "grazing" they do if they're trying to count calories.
Yup, I remember a woman I worked with (herself very obese) telling me she was in a meeting in another person's office with a coworker who is also obese. She said the conversation drifted from work to working out, and she said the coworker was complaining that he was going to the gym and had upped his workout routine, but he still wasn't losing weight. And the whole time he was talking to her, he was eating M&Ms one by one from a dish on his desk.
Salty snacks. Potato chips and corn chips would be the main culprit.
