Firefighters agree, appliances that heat up should never be left unattended. I can't imagine my house burning down with my dogs in it simply because I left the dishwasher on.

I too never leave the washer, dryer or dishwasher on when I am gone. I am guilty of the radio or TV and when Dash was still alive and battling Cancer his tower fan as he tended to be hot and slept in front of that fan. The fan actually stopped working and the poor dog went crazy until I was able to buy him a new one!

For those that do not leave the Radio or TV on for fear of a fire do you also turn off the computer and unplug any chargers be it battery chargers or cell phone? I ask because I have heard of computer moniters and even batteries in lap tops causing fires and chargers do tend to get warm or hot. My dad owned a business and one night an employee left a battery charger going it was a good thing my dad had to go back down after dinner to schedule the deliveries for the next day as he walked in the front office was filling with smoke and a small fire was burning in the office stared by that battery charger. He managed to put it out before any major damage was done but had he decided to leave the scheduling until the morning the story would have ended differently.

I'm cheap, so I leave the radio on because it draws less electricity. She's never shown any interest in the TV, just like each dog I've ever had down through the years hasn't.

Do dogs really watch television? I know my fiance thinks I am nuts, but I leave it on Animal Planet for their amusement when I am not there! Any thoughts on this?
I leave the TV on every day for my dog, but he watches TNT. They know drama!

I used to set Animal Planet on for him, but one day I was home sick and we were watching Animal Planet. The show "Emergency Vets" was on, and if you've ever seen that show, you know that it profiles some seriously injured animals. That day, one of the animals was a dog who had been hit by a car, and he was crying...whining. My dog was sound asleep beside me, but when he heard that dog crying on the TV, he woke up and looked intently at the TV, and then he started to whimper...then whine...then howl. And he kept looking at me with this anguished "Do something, Mom!" look. So I decided that maybe I was traumatizing -- slight exaggeration there -- him by leaving Animal Planet on the TV.

So now Bandit watches Las Vegas and Charmed and Supernatural and The Closer, and I rest easier at work, confident in the knowledge that I'm not traumatizing my dog with the pain and suffering of his cousins. *tongue fully in cheek; I'm very much making fun of myself*

Never let them watch Hitler's Henchmen on the history channel. No need to give them bad ideas.

If I remember correctly in the book "The Art of Racing in The Rain", Enzo The dog telling the story watches national geographic and other TV documentary shows and car racing! he is a very smart dog because of it and plans to come back as a human next time.

If you have not read this book and enjoy a great read this is a fantastic book , sad at times but overall funny. Dog lovers will enjoy it!

Sound can be a good distractor for dogs with separation anxiety. Unfortunately for us, we don't have TV. I do leave music on, sometimes, though. Doesn't seem to do much one way or another, but I figure it can't hurt.

I also think dogs like to listen to music. One of my dogs start howling at the same song. Ever since a puppy everytime this song comes on my dog howls. it is some song by Gwen Stafani. Crazy i know.

We don't watch TV as a lifestyle choice, but my husband does like to see the World Series, so he turns it on then. We were startled to see Bigun was watching the game with him. Not just snoozing on his lap, but actually following the motion of the plays. Yes, they watch TV.

He didn't offer any commentary on which team he was rooting for, or how he felt about the outcome, so it's possible it was just the movement that attracted him. He may have thought the players were birds.

Just remember you are decreasing the life of your television by leaving it on for 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week.
