Dawn, did you get a holster for your weapons? And are you wearing a helmet with a headlamp? Nunchucks?

I'm sorry, I know it's not funny (coyote and/OR walking the dog at 530-6AM), but I just had this visual and it cracked me up!

Hilarious!
There's police holsters, carpenter belts, now...pet owner belt kits?
Sometimes it feels like I need one when I go to the dog park: have some water container and dish (the fountains at dog park are yucky), pouch for treats to subdue aggressive dogs, the possibilities are endless!

Uhhhh, that would be a NO. I'll take Artie though, as Nanners could use the company.

Example of how quiet she is: When we walk along the chain link fence between this property and my one and only next door neighbor, their three dogs follow the whole way barking like the insane pieces of **** they are. Nanners never makes a sound. 95% of the time she ignores them, but once in awhile she'll stand there waiting for a snout to stick through one of the chain link holes, then she'll bite it.

Good girl.

I live out in the country so I don't have the bark problem. I have a lot of friends with shelties who are notorious barkers and they've had mixed reviews of the citronella, many have had better luck with the electronic collar, but the one where YOU control if they get zapped and you can set it to a warning sound then very low zap. What they do if they have a problem barker is they let them outside with the collar on and watch them from a sneaky place inside and zap them when they start to bark, it usually only takes once or twice and then when they hear the warning they are quiet. Then the 2nd phase begins with just putting the collar on and most have found that's all that's needed.

I also went looking at standard schanuzers another really smart dog and one breeder also used the collar but only twice is all it took and then she just put the collar on when they went out.

I don't know what to tell you about the coyote's they are becoming more and more urban since their only natural predator is a wolf and they are gone. I saw a documentary about all the urban coyote and it's pretty scary. They are getting bolder by the day and many big urban cities are inudated. Another part of the problem is they are breeding with feral dogs and that hybred is apparently very very dangerous.

We USED to have a coyote problem but a few neighbors got together and had a little evening shooting match every couple of weeks and now they are back down to an acceptable population.

Becareful out there in the wilds of suburbia those 'yotes can be a real problem.

BAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!! That's hilarious!!!! Luckily, now that it's cool/cold out, I have a jacket with big pockets. And when it's not cool outside, it means it's light enough out that coyotes are less likely to prowl.

So that makes me a pocket ninja?

And the video? That would totally be me! I'd bash myself in the head, though, if I tried to use those.

She's SUCH a good girl.

Look out for a FedEx box arriving Tuesday. That's Artie. I'm shipping him out to you, overnight, tomorrow.

I really don't want to go with a shock collar, but I'd like to invite you to my town to take care of THIS coyote problem. Not that I want them dead, really... I just want them away from my house.

Sigh...

Dawn, I have been away so am a bit late jumping in but the collar worked great for Jazz and my parents dog Henry. It did not take long for them to just hear "Do you want your collar?" to stop any barking! So they did not even have to wear it for long. Jazz being very smart did learn she could vocalize up to a certain level and not set it off but it beat her loud bark by far . She loved to bark at things as we drove past them so in the car was one place I used it until Dash discovered that if she had it on but he barked it would go off and he seemed to enjoy doing that despite the fact he and I also then had to smell it! Crazy dog! That was not fair to her so I stuck it on him a few times in the car and he would bark it would go off but he did not care so while it can work great it does not work on every dog.

Sorry to hear the coyotes are still joining the early morning walks but the visuals of some of the post are pretty funny.

I can't wait for the darn thing to get here already so that I can try it! I'm happy to hear that you had some success with it -- that makes me hopeful.

I'm not worried about Artie reducing his bark level so as not to set it off -- he may be on the small side (35 pounds) but his bark is BIG. He's the Barry White of the canine world, so I have hope.

The walks with coyotes are certainly not funny WHILE they're happening, but after the fact -- after I've LIVED to tell the tale -- I have to find the humor in it, otherwise I'll be afraid to ever leave my house!

Never mind me... How are YOU doing, Jan?

Dawn, I am hanging in there doing the best I can. Took a short weekend trip to the Bay area (5hrs away) while it was very hard leaving the dogs with the pet sitter with all that is going on with Jazz it turned out to be the best thing I could do. I visited two different friends (one had her annual Halloween party so I saw lots of friends there that I have gotten to know well over the years during such parties) and being away from all the sorrow at home and with them has helped me a lot. Nothing quite like good friends!

Jazz's eye is bulging a bit more but looks less so in the AM and more so in the PM so it fluctuates in size. She is not rubbing it, itching it, or squinting and is eating well and running around like Jazz does so I don't think it is painful yet. My pet sitter was worried as Jazz would not let her put some eye drops I had left for her in her eye, But that is Jazz. I have always been the only one allowed to get in her face. Years ago she had to have a stain put in one eye and it was a brand new vet, fresh out of school first day on the job. When she went to wash the stain out Jazz freaked and would not let her do it, threatened her big time the poor little vet got so upset and ended up having to have one of the older vets do it. I felt so bad as of all the patients for this girl to get was my young vet eater Jazz. She probably went home thinking why did I want to be a vet? She was almost in tears after dealing with the beast..as I don't think she had ever dealt with a fear aggressive dog before and this was before Jazz and I worked with the behaviorist so she was frightening yet when I would grab her and tell her to behave she would lick my face like she was saying you stay out of this as this is between me and that vet then return to giving the vet "ugly face" which is what I called it when she is snarling and showing her teeth. Lick me, ugly face to vet over and over anyway the next time we went back that new vet was gone either they got rid of her or she quit and went some place else.

So for now I would say we are holding steady but I am aware that could change very rapidly. I am doing a no grain diet, digestive enzymes, high Omega 3. and using an antibiotic that is anti angiognic so hopefully slowing it down. We will be seeing an eye specialist next Tuesday afternoon to see if she thinks she can get an aspirate of the mass so we know without a doubt if this is cancer and if so what type.If it is a melanoma my vet says we could try the vaccine for it. Hopefully I can keep it stable until we see her. So that is how I am doing, thanks for asking.

As to your walks with the coyotes while frightening at the time they do become funnier in hindsight which is true of a lot of things in life. Hopefully your coyotes are like the ones we have met on walks. Curious about the silly dogs on leash but not interested in doing more then looking at them or me as who knows which they find more interesting as they do seem to enjoy watching ...sort of like how we look at zoo animals only the dogs and I are the zoo animals!

I'm so glad to hear that you're doing OK (or as well as can be expected) and that Jazz isn't in pain.

That Jazz is a character, isn't she??? I love it!

I hope that you feel like your old self (not "OLD!" -- I said "old self!") again soon, and that Jazz has many more years of snarling at people she doesn't like.

It's difficult, sometimes, to love someone so much.
