The safest by far IMO is the plastic crate. They stay contained if there is an accident, can't tangle in it or chew out of it. A friends dog died in a harness during an accident. He was slammed sideways hard enough to crush his chest on the door handle forming. A smooth crate as no projections. I also take any dishes out while the vehicle is moving. Yes, I'm a little over protective.

blue, ive seen those plastic crates tossed and broken wide open, id use lots of zipties or exchange it out for a welded wire crate.

We have the large size.

Anyone have any other suggestions? I have a hatchback so I was thinking of just getting the metal grate between the trunk and the back seat and keeping the dog in the trunk while we drive around.
Is his name "Houdini'? I had a lab once who was a master escape artist--fortunately, it paid off once. Someone stole him and he was able to escape and run home to mama....freshly shampood...
