We have a five month old Boxer cross Labrador female and is a great dog and gets on well with our 12 year old Kelpie cross.
Is it strange for a five month old dog not to bark? We have never heard her bark at all.
Her mother who is a pure bred Labrador didn't bark until she had her pups at two years old.
Any ideas on how to teach our dog to bark?

I didn't think my lab mix would ever bark. I think we had her for two or three months before I ever heard it, and I think the only reason she did start barking was because of my other dog who barks non stop lol

Doigs learn all kinds of things from each other, like eating kitty crunchies, or their own pooop, and probably barking. Your dog is still young.

As others have noted, that's not unusual at all, and AustinB is right that it's best to enjoy that while it lasts.

My Porkchop rarely barked in his first year and still only barks on command or if someone's wearing a hat. Enjoy it while it lasts!

That's so funny about PC and hats! Charlie isn't fond of beards! And to the OP-- consider yourself lucky! I don't think it's something you should try to teach him to do; he'll bark when he's ready.

Ha! PC is not fond of facial hair, either! It was cold the other day, well by San Diego standards, and some of the dog park regulars wore their hoods or hats. Well, PC barked and growled and wouldn't let them come near him til they removed it! He's such a freak. He knows them well, just not with the hat on! Oh, and my husband wore a wig on Halloween, and PC flipped out. He wouldn't let him come near him!

Ain't that the truth! I had an incredibly shy little rescue dog who sklunked around, wouldnt walk with her tail up, was frighteneted to death of everything, even my trying to pet her. Months, I tell you, this went on for months!

Then one day my pup was insisting they play. Holy cow! I nearly fell off of my chair when I heard her first bark....you'd think their was a Rottie in her little body. What a voice! So, I agree...be thankful while it lasts, you never know how powerful those lungs are!
