Sigh...I'll repeat this again the AKC has no authority to regulate breeding practices nor will they ever, it's the breed clubs that you need to direct your angst at not the AKC they are a registry and sanction dog shows.

BTW, The AKC is going a long way to help the mix-breed dog, since it's inception even their "companion events" meaning obedience, tracking, rally, agility etc. were only for AKC registered dogs. They now have a program for the mixed breed dog to compete in these events it's called Canine Partners and you can read about it here: AKC Canine Partners. AKC program for Canine Partners.. So that means there is something to do with your mixed breed dog and you can earn AKC titles in these events. From where I sit that's HUGE and they are supporting and promoting the muttleys of the world and giving them a place to learn, grow and compete right along side their pure-bred cousins.

Is the AKC perfect - no, but they are not the ones to blame for bad breeding practices.

My suggestion to the OP is to write/email or what ever to the WESTMINSTER KENNEL CLUB - they are the club that has chosen not to run the adds...again the AKC had nothing to do with it - it's that particular Kennel Club contact info here: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org.../clubinfo.html. You can also read about the history of the club here: http://www.westminsterkennelclub.org...c/history.html and note the WKC is older than the AKC. Again the AKC is a registry/record keeping entity and have no authority in regards to breeding practices.

You are correct that they have no authority over breeding practices but they have ultimate authority over requirements for REGISTERING with their organization. If a breeder wishes for their dogs to be recognized by the AKC, that breeder must comply with the rules that are in place to be recognized. If the AKC changed its registering requirements to include humane considerations, how long to you think the breed clubs would continue to practice bad breeding practices? The AKC is not to blame for bad breeding, they ARE to blame for turning a blind eye to the problem and not taking a stand against the practice!

People and organizations that are passionate about a cause need to consider the best way to sway the public. While you guys might think that it's important to show misery and suffering, that's not really going to help the cause because the general public changes the channel or covers their eyes.

It's best for the cause to find a compromise. Find something that will sway the public without turning the public off. It's entirely possible to have positive publicity campaigns.

These pound dog commercials aren't any different from the starving children in Africa commercials or the anti abortion posters. I don't think shock value sways the majority of the public. If you care about your cause, figure out what will sway them, instead of going with what you think should sway them.

I agree with Hopes. Positive messages sell better - and WKC has the right to choose to air ads that *won't* cause people to switch channels.

Be as sarcastic as you like. Unless forced by the MONETARY CONSIDERATION of not being able to register with the AKC, breeders will not change their practices.
