I DO NOT recommend Trupanion. I recently had to submit a claim and it has been very difficult to get it paid. They also raised my rates in the middle of the process. They are happy to collect premiums but from my experience, not customer friendly when you have a claim.
Best recommendation I can make is a savings account at your local bank. Find out how much a pet insurance company would charge and put that amount in your savings every month.
Best part is that even if you don't need it for your pup, its still yours

I second this. We paid for insurance for two years, only using it in the first year. When the rates went up, I decided to just save the premiums and once we get over $2,000, we'll re-direct the savings. If we need to use the pet savings, we'll go back to saving for it again. I'm figuring that amount will put a pretty good dent in any emergency care bill.
Two insurance companies I know of are VPI and PetFirst Healthcare.
Thanks for the answers! I've already spent $800 this year in vet fees. I got a quote for compressive coverage + preventive car from VPI. It came out to $48/month with a $100 annual deductible. I'll probably go this route considering vet fees are now almost like visiting a human doctor. The average vet in the Bay Area charges $50 - $60 just to talk to the vet.
Check the policy for pre-existing conditions restrictions. It won't do you any good if the normal things you bring your dog in for are excluded because they are pre-existing.
