I would say the dog in the picture probably has some terrier. We had a 7 lb terrier that tried to dig her way to China in our backyard and if we would not have moved, I am sure she would have it! In Pima County, AZ, you cannot tie a dog in your yard, the dog cannot even be loose unless you have a dog proof fence not even if you are outside with the dog. Most high energy dogs that I have seen, cannot be contained in the yard so they either get off the tie-out, dig out under the fence, climb over the fence and this is usually after they got bored with either digging and/or pulling up bushes/flowers, etc. Then, by the time they are about 18 months old, they are turned into the shelter as being not housebroken, not good with people (has no idea about people after being in the yard alone) and sadly, the person then gives it another shot to find the perfect yard ornament. I have seen some concrete and plastic dogs for the yard and I'm thinking this would be a good option for the OP. You cannot tie a dog outside and bring them in at a certain age and expect that they will have manners and be housebroken. I would not even suggest an older lab or mix for the OP.

The older lab we adopted doesn't drool but after she gets a drink, it drips a few seconds. She doesn't smell oily but has a soft coat but it sheds worse than our chow/shepherd does but I have always had shedders and I always swear I won't get another but always do.

Ultimately, I think that if one really likes the breed, has really done serious research so they know the pros and cons that with perseverance it will work out.
