I only ask this question because I get so annoyed when I step in dog poop that should have been cleaned up. I adopted a less confrontational way of dealing with offenders caught in the act and that is to offer them one of my bags. I generally keep several bags in my pouch when I take my dogs on our walks. By no means do expect someone to pick up poop in the middle of nowhere but I frown upon people that don't clean up in an urban or suburban setting.

So what are your thoughts?

I like your idea of offering a bag. Occassionally I'll head off for a walk with my dog Lily, and realize I forgot a bag, or sometimes Lily ends up pooping in two places and I already tied the bag closed. I'll finish our walk, get a bag at home, and go back for clean-up duty, but anyone watching wouldn't know that was my intention. I'd be thrilled to be offered a bag on the spot.

My neighbors across the street have apparently had problems with dog poop being left in their front yard (which is odd because we have never had that problem). I am completely annoyed with their "solution." They put two signs up in their front yard, on neon orange poster board, that say something stupid like "This is Not a Dog Poop Park" or something like that. First of all, anyone rude enough to leave dog poop is not going to obey their stupid sign. And secondly, I'd rather clean up dog poop than have to look at those obnoxious signs for one more day. They've been up for about a month, and they are an embarrassment to the neighborhood in my opinion.

I feel angry towards people who leave dog s**t where me or one of my little ones can step in it..I've got dogs and I would never let that happen. Just total disrespect for others is all it is....I like ATUMRE75's idea with the bags...doesn't hurt to try.

I have offered people bags, too, and even at the dog park, I bag it, even if few others do. I want people to see that someone is cleaning up after their dogs.

I can also be very prickly about it. At our old house in Chicago, we lived in a higher density neighborhood, and one neighbor would allow her dog to wander way into peoples' lawns on a very long leash, while she stood in the street. One time I walked outside and, yes, I shrieked at her. Poop is bad enough, but the peeing was burning holes in the front lawn.

I've been jogging my neighborhood lately and while most of my neighbors are great about cleaning up there is a trend of picking up the poop in a bag, tying it up and leaving it on the side of the road. I can't imagine who they think is going to come by and clean up after them, now there are stinky little baggies all over the road.

Thanks guys for weighing in and the right thing to do is clean up after your dog or dogs. You can't just leave a large mound on someone's front lawn and think it's ok to leave it there. My inspiration for starting this thread was the large land mine I stepped on this afternoon going to check my mailbox lol!

The HOA board in the community that I currently live in is trying to get mandatory DNA testing approved for all registered dogs in our community. Some people may complain about big brother spying on them but if you scoop your poop it shouldn't even be a concern.

It may not be a 100% solution but it's the best approach IMHO. My reaction probably would have been different if I would have caught the violator that left the surprise on my lawn.

I'm having this same problem as i live in a corner lot and the community mailbox happens to be next to my house...pet owners tend to have their dogs crap in my yard while they go out to get their mail. I already asked the HOA to write a letter for all the pet owners or entire neighborhood, but they said it is impossible to send out that many letters. There has to be like 8 pet owners in my neighborhood. I see alot of dogs. I even posted a sign on the mailbox to let dog owners know to pick up after their dogs or stop their pets from crapping in others yards. It was taken down after a couple of days.

If i could lay something(chemicals) on the grass/yard to deter dogs from stepping on it, that would be great. Better yet, if i could get away with poisoning the dogs, maybe this would finally wake the owners up....btw, bags aren't gonna work! The only way i can avoid this issue is hiring someone to mow my yard, but i want to mow my own yard.

Avoid stepping in dog poop.
