These are my choices at the moment,1 year old house trained Bichon Poo from local shelter/$250, breeder's 3 year old kennel raised retired AKC Labradore Retriver Dam/$500, 8 week old AKC Goldendoodle puppy/$2,000 from a local breeder. Which one would you eliminate and which one would be your ideal choice?

I would for sure drop the 2,000 dollar designer dog. a decent breeder does not mix breeds. the bichon is a sweet dog. the lab is a great dog as well. I would pick between the two depending on how active my life style.

The way to pick a dog is to pick the one that matches YOUR energy.

If you love to jog and will run the Doodle 5 miles a day for 7 years, YAY.

Not kidding either. I was talking to a guy randomly in Petco buying dog food yesterday who said the same thing about his Goldendoodle. Like every single one I've ever known as a dog walker. He has 2 American Bulldogs and a Cocker and it's the 7 year old Doodle that keeps him hopping and he runs her every single morning for 3 - 5 miles.

I vote for the rescue anyway. A Bichon is sweet and the poodle is going to liven the Bichon up a bit...and MUCH less difficult than any Lab or Doodle normally. But I have to say I've never met a "Bichon Poo". So who knows. I know several Malti poos who are all cray LOL. But fun and hilarious.

Of course the poor Lab may be low key by now after being used for breeding and exhausted.

I noted you mentioned housetrained. I would not make that a condition of adoption in your head, you may be disappointed when it's not exactly true. Just in case.

I go for the Bichon mix. I've had 2 Bichons and there is not a more loyal and sweet companion.

Go for the one that works best for you. However, as an owner of a Godlendoodle, they are very, very high energy dogs, they require alot of attention and do not like being alone. They are wonderful dogs but really high energy.

Just an FYI.

Paying 2k for a mixed breed "doodle" that you can find in every pound is like driving down the road and throwing cash out your window for the fun of it. I would call it crazy.

Sad that folks are buying into this idea that a mutt is something special and they are willing to pay such ridiculous prices for the. But as Barnum said "There is a sucker born every minute."

I think the breed Bichon was created by crossing poodle with other breeds.

To OP, I would go and meet them to see which one fits your enegy and lifestyle.

I vote for the rescue from local shelter too. This way you will also give space to another dog who needs to be rescued.

THe individual parents may be AKC reg'd but not the puppies as they're mixes, it's deceptive of the breeder/s to tell you that unless it was misunderstood. As far as personality and exercise requirements, there's exceptions to every rule, of course, but given the info, it would get my vote (just keep in mind regularly-scheduled grooming w/ any of those breeds).

THe bichon/poodle mix would prob. suit your needs more (unless you like to jog constantly) - also it would cost less in grooming as it's smaller - I do like goldens and labs, they're great dogs too, not that familiar w/ st. poodles but Im sure they're nice too but of the 3, my vote would go to the bichon/poodle mix.
