Why do people act so surprised when animals behave as animals do?
If your cat kills a mouse or a neighbor's guinea pig or hamster do you put it down? No, because you understand that a cat is an animal, a predatory one at that, and is only doing what cats do.
If a dog kills a cat, squirrel, or other smaller animal, people get up in arms OMG the dog is a murdererrrrrrrrrrrr!
No, the dog is behaving LIKE A DOG. Just like other animals, their prey drive is individual and some have a higher prey drive than others. In the home, you can manage this by crating, supervising etc. Outside the home, when the dog is in it's own yard? How is the dog supposed to tell the difference between the neighborhood ferals and the neighbor's pet? They can't.
Keep your cats inside and you won't have to worry about dogs, coyotes, raccoons etc or even cars killing your cat.
