I can understand the panic this man had and his only reaction was to fight back when being restrained. Too often we hear about people getting out safely only to run back in to save a pet or another family member and then they lose their life as well.
Maybe some kind of fine--I would gladly donate to this cause. Or community service but not a criminal charge in this case.
Right now, I feel that I'd run back in, but no one knows what they'd do until it happens. I think it also depends whether the heat or smoke is too strong. You might not be able to, even if you have a will to try.
Joose sleeps in one of those air travel crates near the bed. We have fire extinguishers in the bedroom in case of fire as well. I wouldn't have to run in, he would be carried out with me.

^This. At that instant when the homeowner wants to try to run back inside the burning home, the firefighters have no idea if this person realizes what he/she is running into.
I think I would. My life doesn't mean that much to me, and my dogs are what keep me going.
