Yes, they work great. Granted you can deal with the idea of your pet getting a couple of shocks. Usually the collar beeps once when they get to a certain distance and then shocks when they get closer beyond that. Dogs are quick to take note that when the collar beeps, that they cant go any further.

I've always heard that it puts your dog in a tough situation if they can't run away, but another dog can come on your property and attack.

Never heard of that actually happening, but I guess it's possible.

Several of my neighbors have them, and they seem to work quite well. I never see their dogs in the street at any rate.

As long as the batteries are good, it keeps them in - but, does not keep anything out

Default Invisible Fence, a con

Dogs can break through the fence if they decide they want what is out of the yard (fence) more than they don't want the shock from the collar. It became a problem with walkers in our neighborhood.

Yes, I wouldn't trust our Shepherd mix with anything but a 6 ft privacy fence

Actually, if trained probably, which takes at least 30 days they are wonderful. They work so well there are times you won't even have to put the collar on. I would not recommended not putting on the collar if someone is not around. They can break through, but you should be putting the fence shock on a level that allows the dog to come back through, in the beginning. My border collie broke through the fence a couple of times, but always came back. The shock is not painful, as it is alarming. There is a beeping as in a warning, if you teach the dog it's boundaries and teach it the sound, you are off to a great start.

I would only use an installer that is willing to work with you during the training with any problems that may arise. My installer was patient and very concerned the dogs learned in a way we were all happy with the final outcome. I could not contain my shepherds in a fence, they are known to clear 10 ft fences, just how high would I have to build. They don't dare cross the line, took my shepherds 2 weeks and the border collie close to the 30 day mark. I didn't leave them alone during the training process. That way if they did cross, I was there to give them positive reinforcement back into the yard.

They work very well, but you can't just lay a fence, throw a collar on them, and expect it to work. You have to train them properly.
