For your work schedule, if you really want to have a dog, I suggest one of the low energy, short-nosed Asian breeds: pug, Japanese Chin, or Shih Tzu. Not quite as sedate, but close to it, a Cavalier Spaniel or English Toy Spaniel.
High energy, intelligent dogs who want to spend all of their time with their humans are a bad choice for people who aren't home much.
Actually, there are some couch potato dogs that might do pretty well but you'd still have to give up either the gym and college classes or the job. Doing all that just doesn't leave enough time for any canine companion IMO.
Retired racing greyhounds are relatively easy dogs. Low energy except when they spy a moving critter hence their requirement to be leashed at all times. Crate trained, leash trained and generally enjoy laying around more than many other breeds. Not potty trained but are usually easily taught. And stairs are often a new experience for them. Gentle temperament. Large but not hairy.
How about a cat? Abyssinians are very dog like by nature. An Aby would be much more demanding of your time than a typical cat but less so than a dog.
Dazzle is a couch potato and if he gets a run in he is content. However he loves having me around and sulks big time on the 3 nights I go to work so even couch potatoes want want their human around!

They sure do! That's why the OP would need to "give up either the gym and college classes or the job".
I didn't want to post on this thread because it really felt like a troll thread but this was shared with me recently and it seems to fit pretty well (just need to change the breed )
