I agree with you about needing to meet the puppy/dog first, especially since it will be your companion. Many people just go by looks. I usually talk to potential adopters at least 2-3 times before they make the trip to meet one of my fosters. I want them to know the good and the bad, full disclosure, to make sure they are on board. It also gives the adoption the best chances for success.

OP, did you have a chance to ask around at local pet supply stores, groomers, etc. for names of local rescues?
I have been searching local shelters and searching PetFinder and Adopt-A-Pet daily. My vet referred me to PetFinder. I also have been checking the bulletin board at a local pet store and keep an eye on the classifieds from two local newspapers. I have given up on RescueMe.org because that seems to be mostly dogs being transported from other areas with no chance to meet the dog before committing.

My two nearby shelters have 2 dogs and 5 dogs respectively. They are too big for me.

How close are you to Fryeberg, Maine? I found a rescue that has several nice, young small dogs. They transport from shelters in LA.

Thanks. I'm not that close to ME. And if I'm going to adopt from out of state, there are plenty of rescues closer to me who do that. I still will insist on meeting the dog before committing.

Have you checked the pets section of your local craigslist?

You should always meet a dog before committing unless you are getting a young puppy who can be moulded to your likes and dislikes and has no baggage.

But you know, with the exception of a severely abused dog, and even then, once a dog knows they are in a safe place and you become their safe person, most dogs just want to please as long as you are willing to patiently show them what it is you want from them.

I hope you find the perfect dog for your needs.
