So we went to the vet yesterday to check on the abscess in her mouth. The vet said it was healing great and that she looked really happy. This morning, my old girl couldn't get out of bed. I thought it might get better as the day wore on, but after she walked around a little (to follow me), it was clear her legs weren't working right. When I went to put her outside after work, I had to carry her outside and down the steps and she couldn't stand on her own. So I knew it was time.
I went and got myself cleaned up and took her out for a burger and ice cream. She ate the burger, but only picked at the ice cream (which she LOVES) - so I knew she was not feeling great at all. We went to the veterinary ER and the same vet who had seen her originally for the abscess was the one who saw us tonight. She and the rest of the staff were lovely. One of them brought my old girl a little mattress and a blanket to lay on, and I snuggled with her while we waited for the vet to come back.
The euthanasia went well, and she passed away very peacefully. I feel pretty good about it - it was a best possible sort of outcome. I mean, it was mostly 16 good years, and then one kinda crappy day and she went out with a burger and snuggles. But yeah, it feels a little weird now.
Just figured I'd give you guys an update after you've helped me hash out so many things with her care and welbeing over the last few years. That was much appreciated!
I'm sorry for your loss. Those of us who have been through this owe it to others to tell our experience with euthanasia. Of course it's not easy but it is what is best for the cherished animal.
You and your girl had 16 wonderful years together- what a gift. I am glad her time with you ended gently, and know she will always be with you in your heart. Deepest condolences on your loss.
