Any Doxie moms or dads out there this happened to? She jumped off the bed and let out a yelp and then hid shaking and dragging her butt. Obviously she was hurt, immediately took her to the vet and they took tons of tests. She has a couple collapsed disks and has to stay in a crate for 30 days not moving. They said she may need surgery if it doesn't get better. It's breaking my heart because she is in so much pain and can't move. Anyone go through this? Any advice or can you tell me if your dog had the surgery and how it went? She is only 2.5 yrs old and so sweet, it's terrible. : (

Oh Rapture - you have to be out of your mind with worry! I have a good friend that went through a similar crisis with her Dachshund a couple of years ago. It did take a surgery and a very long convalescense but her girl came through it ok. I know she is very careful now about not allowing her girl to jump off even a step but Pepper came through ok. I guess the best advise I can give is to make sure that your vet is trained in dealing with back injuries in Dachshunds. I know my friend did go to a specialist for her dog's treatment and surgery. Healing thoughts to you and your fur baby!

I don't own one but have friends that do and there is a wealth of info and support from Dachshund club people

Wiener Woman: Attention Dachshund Owners

These are just a few links you can find to educate yourself about Dachshund back problems. There are plenty of people to talk with and make a decision that is right for you and your dog. Make sure you understand all about alternative therapies for your dog vs the types of surgery they might perform and make sure if you choose surgery it is done by a recommended Dachshund specialist not just a regular vet.

the good and bad news is this is an extreemly common problem in doxies, they should never be allowed to jump on/off courches and beds and stairs can also be a big problem for them...

because its such a common issue its not hard to find a vet experienced with doxies and this issue and the outlook from surgery is typically good...
unfortunatly back injuries are so common that many doxies find themselves with at least some back problems by the time they are 2 years old and paralasis in the rear end is not uncommon in the breed.

lots of rest, im sure the vet gave you an anti inflamatory and hopefully a pain killer too (if not call your vet and ask about baby asprin dosages), and from now on, lift on and off beds/couches and down stairs...it might be worth getting a little pet ramp if shes on the bed/couches often (i suggest a ramp NOT steps) as once they have a back injury, its likely to reoccur if care isnt taken.

hugs to you all, its so worrying when one of our babies is hurting, but im sure with some rest and some modifications to her daily doings in the future she will be fine, they are a tough breed despite the tendency towards back problems

Thx everyone for info. and support. She is so scared and sad it's killing me. I feel so guilty for letting her jump off the bed. A friend mentioned doggie chiropractors, what do you think of this? Personally, I'm not for it but if it's a good thing for her I would consider it. She's such a little angel, so sad.

foxywench (funny name) - you mentioned it's common for this breed to become paralyzed? Does that usualy reverse with surgery?

Here's a pic of my baby from last year. She's also my profile picture.

if the damage isnt too severe medication and/or surgery can prevent it...
but its unfortnatly not uncommon for some doxies to end up with such bad back injuries that they never recover (they make doggy wheelchairs to help)

in this case i dont think your baby is going to end up paralyzed, it sounds like with some bed rest, meds and time shell heal up nicely...
but it is something to be aware of and take the nessicary precautions...

doxies that have perminent back problems are typically caused by a doxie getting an injury, their people not noticing (or letting it fix itself) then it happens again and again because they dont take the nessicary precautions to prevent the injury reoccuring, and eventually it becomes perminent.

I've used a dog chiropractor in the past, but I wouldn't recommend it right now. Until she's feeling better you want as little movement as possible in her spine. I don't think a decent chiropractor would want to go anywhere near an acute injury like she has.

Ear rubs for her! I hope she feels better soon!

So sorry...ours had a problem like that, but she got better, and lived a long life. But we never let her up on the bed, and always picked her up to get on the sofa and off. She had her own little dog bed, with a blankie she would cuddle in. Her name was Penny.

What a beautiful dog! So sorry this happened. IMO if the vet thought it was really bad, she'd have been in surgery already. Hope it goes well.
