I just called to get price of a dog bath for my lab. I was quoted $55... I am blown away.

I was thinking it would be easier to just pay someone to make him smell better again... but not for that price.

Is there some reason you can't do it yourself?

I go to a self-serve place that charges about $15. They have the tubs, supply soap and towels, the water sprayers, etc.

If the lab had money, it would pay you to give it a bath. They are so happy to get wet.

I just head to my own shower. I've got a spray head on a hose thingy. Shampoo is cheap. Works a champ. And a lab's short hair should be a lot easier than my medium coated farm collies. Clean the hair out of the drain when done.

That price is pretty standard. In the 90's my family used to pay $45 for our greyhound to be groomed which is easier than a lab, no undercoat. We wanted to reward the groomer for accepting our other dog who was a fluffy little biter. Groomers have to pay the worker, liability insurance, rent, etc.

It's about $40 to bathe my GSDs at the vets (not at a groomer's) so $55 doesn't sound too off to me. I usually do it myself outside but in the winter I take them to be bathed. No way am I dealing with the mess and the hair in my bathrooms.

Take the dog to the river, lake, ocean, child's wading pool or car wash. Labs will self bathe. Your problem will be how to get dog out of the water.

After we spend time in the creek that runs through our urban park... we use the rinse hose there (at the dog run).
That's all he gets until/unless he has gotten into something that really warrants more than a rinse.
That'll occur 2-3 times a year and the shampoo gets done in the driveway at home.

A car wash??? Absolutely not. Those sprayers are way too strong to use on a dog. It would be quite painful for the dog and could injure them. It most places it would be considered criminal animal cruelty.

Sometimes you need shampoo to get a dog clean so a quick dip in water that may or may not be clean isn't always the answer.

Car wash, an illustration. The dog in wagon getting a rub-a-dub. Leave out the wax and blow dry. 4 minutes. $16 please.
