Tom, I think we have some similar issues with our new adoptees! Hobbs still hasn't peed now in 30 hours and I'm begining to suspect renal disease (other symptoms, too)--maybe that's why he was dropped off at the shelter? We both have lots of work to do with these dogs to teach them manners.

Labs are the best breed in my book. Some good advice on this thread. One thing I learned was do NOT assume your lab can swim--even if he has webbed toes as labs do. I adopted a 7 year old yellow lab/shepared mix years ago from a shelter. Assumed she would love to swim in the lake. Took Goldie down to the lake and out on the dock to where the water was about 4 feet deep. Threw a tennis ball in and she immediately jumped in after it---- she sank right to the bottom! 100 lbs. of dog standing on the bottom of the lake looking up at me through the water wondering what to do. I yelled at her "swim!" After what seemed like an eternity, she paddled up to the surface and headed right for shore. Refused to go back into the water. I worked with Goldie for 6 months to get her back into the water and to swim. She turned out to be a strong swimmer but always preferred wading in the shallows.

I'm just loving all this chatter about labs--there is a reason why they one of the top breeds for guide and utility dogs. My 2nd lab was the smartest dog I've ever known--he had a huge "vocabularly". His favorite words were probably "rib-bone" and "swimming".
