One of our fosters was turned in and we were told she was spayed. The girl that turned her in couldn't produce any vet paperwork or a vet name, so we'd scheduled her - we thought - for exploratory with possible spay.
The day of the spay we found out we'd only made 2 appointments. We had pending applications on 2 dogs so we sent them and planned on re-setting Maggie's appointment.
In the meantime Maggie was having some behavior / temperament issues and I thought of putting her down. Because that potential was there, and it was a very serious consideration for a while, we never did the exploratory.
A month goes by and she seems to be doing a bit better. I took her in 12 days ago for her shaving to get rid of the winter coat. She was fat. I just thought it was because she'd been cooped up all winter and hadn't been able to play.
Sunday looking at her, and her acting weird it hit me that she may be pregnant. Totally plausible. We did have one male that wasn't neutered until 2 months ago. I called the vet in a panic and asked for a fast spay / abort, but he said it was probably too late. I begged, I pleaded. He said to bring her in Thursday.
Maggie decided to not wait for that and had her puppies on Tuesday. 8 of them; 4 black, 4 blond.
Needless to say, once they're weaned at 8 weeks Mags will be spayed. All the puppies will be vetted and then placed for adoption. In the meantime I'm keeping a very close eye on the cutest (and only) mistake we've had. What a lesson to be learned though. Even if they don't show signs of being in heat they very well may be. Spay and neuter those dogs or this could happen to you!!
