We had dogs AND cats when I was a kid, I had cats as a young adult, now that I'm over the half century mark, I have a dog and cat. It's wonderful, why not try it? (P.S., my cat, who came from the shelter, thinks he's king of everyone and grew up with dogs in the neighborhood, if not at his house, the dog I got from the shelter was comfortable with cats, so the "adjustment period" went very quickly and well --- they have been best friends for many years now).
I have had both for many years. I always had at least 2 of a speies so they can keep each other company, although my first cat and my 3rd one both liked the dogs. In fact, one of the cats would usually sleep in the dog's crate.
As an adult on my own I had cats and loved them. After I married and had kids the kids begged for a dog, so we got one, then two , now three. I have to say I am absolutely crazy about dogs. I found out why dogs are considered man's best friend. They are just totally devoted to their person and offer unconditional love. Plus you can get non-shedding dogs!
i've always been a cat person too, but i love my dog! it's just a different thing. i never actively disliked dogs but i always felt like they were too needy and too much responsibility. getting a dog is the first thing i did that really made me feel like a grown up at 30 - marriage, buying a house didn't do that!
a big issue though, is how a prospective dog and your cat would get along. i have 4 cats - 1 basically ignores the dog after roughing her up a bit early on, 1 hangs out with the dog (i predict snuggling when it gets cold), 1 wouldn't sleep in our bed for a year and is just now getting used to having the dog around (and coming to bed with us, thank goodness, although she still doesn't trust the dog!), 1 probably will never stop being scared of the dog. and of course even more important is how the dog reacts to the cats! but that's a little easier to gauge - a dog meets a cat, they will probably react the same the first and hundredth times. a cat meets a dog, they probably won't like it at first no matter what. they may be able to get used to it over time and they may not.

When I was a little girl we had dogs. Baby, a mix of good size and Peppi, a pikanese.
My cousin got a cat so I just had to have one and got it.
Not long after, Peppi bit me and I have a lovely scar on my lip all these years later.
I am thinking about it and maybe that is why I mecame a cat person.
I have always had a cat or two since then and felt like I was in agony when I was without one. terrible, right?
When I was a young adult I had two large dogs that were brothers and a mix of Shepard and lab. Nice dogs...
Little Elmer... it's not hard to understand about cats. You've just never been educated. It's really just two sentences.
Dogs have masters. Cats have staff.
That is so true. I just came across Miss Kitty and I picked her up and asked her why she didn't call me, gave her all kinds of love and affection.
Aww.. everybody loves the kitty, I tell her. Geez!
