Wondering if anyone has had any luck with removing tear stains. I have a 5 year old maltese. I have tried the eye envy and angel eyes. both have not really done the trick. Strangly the stain has moved to his muzzle as well. Any recommendations would be appreciated.
The only thing I ever came across when I was a groomer was shampoo specially made for white dogs. You can get it at any pet store. I have a blonde dog who has tear stains and making sure the hair is trimmed there near the eye did seem to help.
You have to stay on top of maintaining their coat in order to do it with the mild drops. there is also food you can feed them that is supposed to limit the tear stains they get. My pittie is starting to get them so I'm looking into it as well.
Changing kibble did the trick for my white faced Boston. I didn't want to rely on a commercial product so after carefully studying and reading about dog food ingredients, I decided to stay away from any containing beet pulp - and it worked. Also, I wash her face every night before bed, just with warm water and a soft cloth.
I have two Bostons and one Frenchie and after playing with stuffies, frisbees and balls, they have "slobber" on their faces - then I'll use a product called Spa Fresh Facial Scrub. But I'm still a firm believer that the kibble's ingredients have a lot to do with it. Good luck - hope you find something that works for your pup.
ViralMd is right - the very reason I didn't want to use a prescription drug or other commercial product. Even Angel Eyes and Eye Envy contain tylosin/tylan - that's an antibiotic too.
I forgot to add another thing I tried and maybe it helped also - adding a teaspoon of dried buttermilk powder to Zayda's food once a day. You can find it in the baking aisle of your supermarket. I only did this for about 3 or 4 months.
My neighbor told me she heard that pineapple juice will help. Now how you get a dog to drink that, I'm not sure. She said her dog will eat pineapple. Make sure your dog doesn't have diabetes.
You probably know this already but if you don't here goes. The stains are caused by the protiens in the tears. As long as the dogs eyes water there will be stains because there is always protiens in tears. If you can solve the tears,no more stains.
