I agree - go with the bland diet for a while. Prayers up coming from TN.

You say she is hiding under things and between things too, has something changed? Is there noise up stairs that was never there before? Does she have moments or minutes where she is just blank staring at nothing? Her eyes twitching? What type of dog food are you feeding her and what types of treats?

I'm so scared. She's hiding now on the shelf on my nightstand. She's been up there for 2 hours and growled at me when I tried to get her out. She has never growled at me before. (She has growled at my son) I think she's in pain and I don't know how to help her.

Nothing has changed in my house. Same old same old. I've wondered if Ringo got too rough with her in play and scared her. But I have never left them alone together and I haven't seen anything out of the ordinary.

She appears listless and her eyes seem . .. sick. Not twitching. Sad and tired. She's been staring at nothing all day. BUT she did start whining when I put Ringo's leash on to take him for a walk. It's wayy too cold to take her. So, she's not totally out of it.

I was giving her TOTW and mixing it with the Purina Puppy Chow that the breeder gave me. Treats are Pupparoni - they have never bothered her before.

When she first got sick two days ago, I had put a little bit of canned Alpo on her kibble. That's what I thought it was. But now I'm not sure. Of course, no more canned food has been given since Thursday early evening. No treats.

Tonight I did give her a little bit of boiled chicken and rice. She didn't eat much.

I don't think it's fear . . at this point. I think she is in some kind of pain and just sick.

I'm afraid I could lose this little girl and I really don't know what to do right now. She's been to the Vet twice in 24 hours and he can't find anything either. I'm tearing up as I write this because I feel really inadequate to help her. I'm going to go coax her out with some chicken and at least hold her.

Sending prayers and positive thoughts Lucy's way. I hope you can get to the bottom of this behavior soon and that is nothing serious.

Ringo,

Because her sister had a liver shunt, I would try feeding her low protein foods and see how she reacts.

This is a link to an article from the University of Tennessee, Veterinary College that I thought you might want to read.

Liver Shunt Research

I feel for you on a Saturday night when all the vet clinics are closed with a sick baby.
I hope she feels better soon and it's nothing serious.

Thanks World Citizen. My vet mentioned Ohio State University if it comes to that. I think that the Hills L/D is by prescription - but I'm not sure. I hope to know something for sure after the test on Monday.

The worst thing is - my son has a swim meet 3 hours away tomorrow. I'm not sure if we will go.

My cousin, who loves Lucy and used to own a Yorkie is supposed to come and get her .. . . but I don't know. I would feel really awful if something happened and I was away.

On the other hand, I wonder - if it is fear - if she will do better in my cousin's house - very quiet and peaceful and no other dog.

I predict Lucy will be better and more active in the morning . . . before she eats.

I'm sorry Ringo. I hope your trip back to the vet can find the problem.

Hills L/D runs about $36 for a case of the wet food. We get ours from the vets office.

Col Deering,

Does your dog have liver problems? I hope to find out soon if mine does. My vet says that it's not a death sentence anymore.

Yup, we almost lost her to liver failure in October. A specialist did an ultrasound on her and found that her liver was quite swollen, irritated and her gallbladder is in poor shape. Her liver enzyme levels were off the chart, and that's not an exaggeration. It was touch and go for some time. But, fortunately, we still have her with us. She will have an enzyme panel every 6 months, can only eat Hills L/D and she is currently taking 2 medications. So, yes, liver problems aren't necessarily a death sentence and livers can heal themselves (with the exception of scirosis, etc.). Our dogs liver problem is complicated by a slushy gallbladder, so it still is one day at a time for us.

BTW, did your vet recommend a half tablet of Pepcid AC (10mg)?
