I have "rub 'n buff" dogs that don't require any special grooming and only rarely, a bath. The cordless Dremel is the tool of choice for nails; ear cleaning and we're done.

My DH grooms our Lhasa. He started years ago, when we had two of them and the $100/month was too dear for us. He uses a good professional electric clipper that he bought from a hair salon supply house. He trims the nails, too.

That said, I take Bigun (Beagle-Cocker Spaniel) to the salon ever six weeks for his nails to be trimmed. He's too big and squirmy, and I'd rather he fight them than us.

I cut my dogs hair with a shaver that has a bunch of attachments. I paid nearly 200 for it and I use it to cut my hair as well.

I did grooming for many years and still groom our two border collies. I know it is a real pain but if you are having trouble clipping through the hair a bath first really helps. You will find the blades sail through their clean coats and will last a lot longer. I have three pair of clippers so when one pair starts to get hot I switch to another. Cool lube on the blades or WD40 when I can not get cool lube. We live in the sticks. But if you do use WD40 wipe your blades on a towel before going back to clipping.

I usually trim Caesar the day after I wash him. He doesn't have the full peke coat, but it does get hot here in the summer (Colorado) so I keep his coat real short most of the year....

I used to groom my shih tzu (she was old and always came back from the groomer limping, so I stopped taking her). I used a professional Oster A4 that was amazing. I had a great groomer once and used to watch her work (she invited me) so I picked up a lot. Too bad I moved. It took a long time to get the face right (I scissored much of the face).

I have a dremel for my current dog (a hound mix who doesn't need a haircut). She's not crazy about it, but I'm getting her used to it with treats. Here's a GREAT site explaining how to dremel your dog's nails (click on the link on the left):

DoberDawn.com (http://homepages.udayton.edu/~merensjp/doberdawn/index.html - broken link)

I also let my dog chase a ball on a tennis court and that is the best nail filer, ever!

I've always groomed my own dogs. It just saves so much money! I've had a couple of terrier mixes that I had to trim. I used scissors and it never took me that long to style them. With the nails, I use clippers and emery boards to file down just a bit further. I try very hard never to cut the quick as it would make future nail clipping more difficult for me to do.
