I'm conflicted...

You keep hearing this, but I remember reading a report (years ago, forget the source) breaking down the % of them who died before collecting social security, medical bills etc (went into how the last 2 years of life are the most expensive...)

Would be interesting to check and see

... and regardless of how long the life was up to that point.

Try to picture your basic Second-Amendment Libertarian American paying a tax to an international entity.

No, the issue is bigger than mere money. It's about power. Money is an important aspect of power, but not the only one.

And how exactly do they plan on enforcing this? I see Japan, which sells super cheap cigarettes, laughing in their face.

It's true, I've seen studies indicating that the healthy and unhealthy incur similar medical costs over their lifetimes. Healthy people live to ripe old ages and are the ones that have the cataracts, knee replacements, hip replacements etc etc etc.

Not to mention social security benefits for decades longer than smokers.

Imagine 1500/month in social security x 30 years longer lifespan. Close to 1/2 million dollars.

The poor smoke...cigarettes in Canada are pushing 10 dollars a pack...most of that is tax..Every one is critical of the poor for not paying as much tax as the rich- The poor who smoke pay more tax in comparison to the well off....Medical costs regarding smoking related disease is over blown- The number of lung cancer cases is not as high as predicted...emphysema - throat cancer etc...Is taking place in non smokers as well as smokers...The human body has proven to be more resistant to carcinogens than predicted...smokers are dying around the same time as non-smokers...Genetic factors come into play...some get sick some don't.

As for taxing drug addicts....who use a legal substance- It is more morally reprehensible than a smoker blowing smoke in a baby's face- It is totally evil to suck the life out of the poor economically through addiction tax. Making them more poor through taxation will damage their health more than smoking ever will..You take food away from tobacco addicts...malnutrition will slowly kill them...

A pack of tobacco leaves is worth a dollar- it should be sold for a two dollars...it cost about 300 dollar a month to smoke in Canada..that is a lot of good food..to further tax the nicotine junkie is immoral.
