Also they're not really interested in pushing more work under the table. They like collecting taxes.
I would if my family all lived together and chipped in for housing expenses like theirs do.

Let's say a college basketball player signs with a pro team as he is graduating, with a big fat signing bonus. Then he celebrates by buying a hot fast car, getting drunk, driving too fast, and going out in a blaze of glory without playing one minute.

Did he earn his millions?

No. Their "happiness" is their responsibility. They only care about keeping them productive. Part of that is making sure that they find satisfaction in doing their job.

I see loads of people here in Southern California buying $600,000-800,000 homes without much thought, in addition to luxury cars, dining out at expensive restaurants, wearing very nice clothes etc. Can't do it without at least $250,000+ household income so my guess is that the typical income here is north of $200k, or $100+k/piece.

Sounds like you have the luxury of having a dysfunctional family. First World Problems, as they are called.

There are cheap to live states out there. NYC and LA are more expensive. I am sure that in places where you can rent a house for $600 a month 2 working adults making 50k each would do well.

In NYC, 50k is not much though.
