Than why was inflation so low from 1981 through 2020? Lots of deficit spending and low inflation rates.

Do you have your dates right? The 80s were not a period of low inflation.

Regardless, there is a phenomenon known as "fiscal dominance" where deficit spending can swamp tight monetary policy.

If anything it's good because I simply won't pay these prices. with certain items I have no choice...but I also don't need to spend $5.99 for a bag of chips.
I spent $70 at Publix today, and that was maybe four bags worth. Boar's Head lunch meat ham, salami, a premade (but still have to cook) chicken dinner, produce (corn, raspberries, onions), breakfast burritos ($3 each now, were around $2.50), half gallon of organic milk for about $4, zero sugar Greek yogurt ($1.25 each - used to be about $1), microwavable rice, half gallon of tea, half gallon of lemonade. No alcohol or colas.

I've been out of town since Monday night - got about 3. I'm leaving again Friday night. I'll probably have most of the non frozen perishables, aside from the drinks, gone by Friday.
