I lived in El Paso many years - I always felt safe. Its divided by the mountains but basically consists of Lower Valley - mostly hispanic main branch of El Paso Community College NorthEast - more military in nature Westside - more professional UTEP. Central mixed some nice old houses. My favorite neighborhood is Sunset Heights lots of old buildings overlooking downtown and convenient to all areas.

Don't buy a house in El Paso. Look at Santa Teresa New Mexico. It's basically like a subdivision of West side El Paso. If you plan on buying a home check out property taxes in El Paso then look at Santa Teresa. I have met sooo many people who wish they had moved to Santa Teresa instead of El Paso and are trying to sell their El Paso homes and move there now. Good luck on finding a good school. I hear there are like one or two of them in El Paso but you should count on going to a private school. I don't know anyone that can afford private that sends their kid's to public school here. Mine were in public for a few months before I just pulled them out and homeschooled until I could get them into a private school. Most private schools have waiting lists if that tells you anything.
