While driving through El Paso the other day I saw some huge ingraved lettering on the mountain on the Juarez side. I was just curious what does it say. In my opinion, it is somewhat of an eyesore for such a beautiful mountain range and backdrop.

The gigantic white letters up there on the mountainside proclaim: "La Biblia es la verdad. Leela." Translation: The Bible is the truth. Read it.

Message on the mount: 1/2/00

Quote:
Gerardo Bermudez, an evangelical pastor whose idea it was to paint the phrase on the mountain.
Bermudez says he organized the project in 1987 after attending a meeting of ministers who wanted to do something to show the unity of evangelical Christians in Juarez.

Bermudez never asked the city for permission to paint on the mountainside, and no one ever demanded he get a permit.
Juarez city spokesman Javier de Anda Martinez says he can't recall any objections to the display.
"We respect freedom of expression," de Anda says. "We don't see anything wrong with that message, and I think it can be a positive one."
He said the mountain, Cerro Bola, is city property and that Bermudez did not have to get a permit.

I totally agree with you that it's an ugly eyesore! The sad part is that it sits on city property but they don't care to remove it. According to the old article provided by Gary Siete, it appears that the minister that put it up there never requested or had permission to disfigure the mountain. If that's the case, and if I had the means I would go over there myself and remove the dang thing. I am of Christian faith but what this minister did in 1987 was very arrogant.

Dude...1987? That was a long time ago. Not all of them are the same. Time to move on.

Speaking of things on Jrz. mountains, does that illumination of Homer Simpson still appear on the mountain at night? It's actually supposed to be Benito Juarez, but, well, looks more like Homer. I haven't driven on the east side at night for some time, so dunno if it's still there.

I stand corrected - that's definitely the esteemed B. Juarez. It's just that from the corner of Lee Trevino & Rojas, it looks like Homer. Great pics, BTW.
