Does anyone think that this country will actually have a strong third party (Independent/libertarian) that can go up against the republicrats?!? Especially for president.
"Vote republicrat because your vote means nothing anyway".
So we are going continue to vote for the lesser of two evils and have a continual downward spiral in this country because of abortion?! You've got to be kidding

That's exactly what will happen and each will be blaming the other side as we spiral down.

I think that the best we can hope for is the Republicans move toward moderation on the social issues and return to the principle of compromise on fiscal ones. I don't know if victory or failure will be more persuasive in that regard. Maybe the best thing would be prosperity.
Will this party be for or against abortion. Oops, I just destroyed your third party.
There is actually some truth to that. Where I live this is one of the biggest issues. I understand why people on both sides care deeply about it, but I don't see how it is one of the biggest issues. To me, it seems like there are more pressing issues.
In the Republican Primary for Governor, it was the biggest issue. Everyone accusing Snyder of secretly being pro-choice. Snyder then had to run ads just about his abortion position. Then when he won and ran against the Democrat, the left accused him of secretly being extreme-pro-life. Snyder then once again, had to pull out the same ad. Poor Snyder, is secretly both extreme pro-choice and extreme pro-life. The debates focused the most time on....abortion.
Usually the two parties will adjust a little bit to siphon off any serious support that leaves, so people should vote 3rd party if they don't agree with either of the big 2 if only for that reason.

Not because of abortion but because there's too much $$$ at stake and the entrenched parties will fight tooth and nail to make sure it only gets split two ways.

as long as third parties think the way to success is to run for president with no power base in the House/Senate/States, the answer is no.
You want a third party? start local, build some success. win some state houses, get some Members of Congress, gain some governorships. THEN and only then run for president.
Its hard work and takes time but it is the only way a third party will ever become a player in American politics.
There seems to be a presumption here that a 3rd party would be conservative.
Historically, most of the 3rd parties that had any success were liberal; many were radically liberal for their time. That includes the Republican Party, which was the only 3rd party to achieve permanent success. It is also the only party that plowed a conservative party into political extinction.
How did the Republicans do it? By exactly the way Ferd described.
