If you look at the red/blue maps of 00, 04, 08, 12 you will see massive amounts of red. But it is the blue areas where Santa Claus gives all the presents. And the payback for all the presents is a vote.

All of the blue areas tend to be high dense cities while the sea of red is very sparsely dense areas of the country....

New York is 350 square miles with over 8 million people while the whole state of Idaho has 1.5 million people.
