No, in head-to-heads, the pollsters don't ask for views on a generic Democrat versus a generic Republican. If so, your argument makes perfect sense. Rather, the pollsters ask specifically like Hillary vs. Jeb, Bernie vs. Trump. Of course, people's opinions change daily but it is useful to have these snapshots. If Mr. Trump were beating Hillary in head-to-heads now, I am certain that the conservatives would be jumping up and down with glee.
