Republicans Give Mixed Reasons for Obama Votes | The Trail | washingtonpost.com

Quote:
That would be Mark Maglioa, 48, whose vote for the Illinois senator was purely strategic.

Maglioa said Obama has been speaking with a "forked tongue" about his history with the Rev. Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr., the longtime leader of Chicago's Trinity United Church of Christ.

Wright performed Obama's marriage and baptized his two daughters. One of his sermons inspired the talismanic title of Obama's most recent memoir, "The Audacity of Hope."

"For 20 years, he was an inspired member of that church, and then the dirty laundry got pulled out on the clothes line," said Magioa, who was unimpressed when Obama broke with Wright last week, following a series of Wright statements about the AIDS virus, U.S. foreign policy and the wisdom of Nation of Islam leader Louis Farrakhan that Obama denounced as "rants."

Yet Maglioa voted for Obama.

Why? Because as a supporter of likely Republican nominee Sen. John McCain, Maglioa aimed to help the Arizona senator by boosting the Democrat he considers the weakest November opponent.

"Barack Hussein Obama," Maglioa said, using the middle name that Obama does not use professionally. Of Sen. Hillary Clinton, he said with grudging admiration, "I just feel like she won't fold under pressure."

Oh, no! He's doomed! Some guy voted for him for the wrong reason!

I like what Chris Matthews said -- those who used their vote to make mischief this year should carry that shame with them for the rest of their lives. People have died so they could have that right. Mark Maglioa is obviously not much of a citizen.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of Republicans voting for Obama for the same reason.

In some states, in years prior, they voted for Jesse Jackson for the same reason. Jesse Jackson did pretty well at winning Democratic primaries in states that went Republican. They looked at him as a spoiler.

Obama will never win in the general election, even running against a dinosaur. It just won't happen.

It has nothing to do with his race but it has everything to do with how gullible Democrats are. They think charisma is going to win over hard facts and experience and it just won't anymore.

I would agree that this is a shame. I feel that everyone should exercise their right to vote, even write ins that have no chance of winning...the point would be to show your support or your beliefs.

To stir up trouble with your vote is just dumb!

If Obama is the nominee, McCain will run away with the election in November. It just doesn't make sense. Moderate Democrats like me will flock to moderate McCain over liberal Obama.... If Clinton were the nominee, she'd get moderate and liberal voters.

I'm seriously pissed that Obama will win this nomination and we'll have a Republican for four more years, but until the Democrats get their act together they don't deserve to win. This is the third election in a row that we could win but are throwing away.

Ditto for me too. I can't believe the Democrats threw away this chance to win the White House -- and it ticks me off so bad that I'm wondering why I am voting for Democrats in the Senate and Congress. (Everytime I hear Nancy Pelosi talk about the Presidential election, it makes me angry.) Seriously, is the Democratic party moving way over to the far left? If so, I'm going to have to vote for Republicans.

And if Hillary is the nominee, lots of people will flock to McCain. The bottom line is there's going to be a whole lot of flockin' going on.

She can't get enough voters now. Why can't you HillBillies get that through your skulls? She's LOSING the popular vote, LOSING the delegate vote, LOSING money by the millions, LOSING her own pledged supporters, all but completely LOST the African-American vote, which is a crucial block of voters...the woman is a LOSER. How the hell would she win against McCain if she, the wife of one of our most popular former presidents, can't even beat some black kid from Chicago?
