Senator McCain has crowds flocking chanting drill, baby drill. Now what will he do? The Democrats put forth a Bill to Drill, the Republicans reject it, the Bill passes and we're off to the Senate. Senator Obama has decided to compromise and support some resolution to allow drilling. How will this play out? Time will tell, invariably Senator McCain looks to be in a difficult spot. Drill baby drill has become a rejected accepted reality in a battle that's 47miles apart.
"The Republicans went into a tizzy and made motions to adjourn but failed. So, the Democrats called their bluff, put up a bill and now the Republicans try to put it off. Gee, why don't the Republicans want to be on record voting for a drilling bill? In August they refused to adjourn and now in September they can't wait to adjourn."

"The new bill, which was put forward by the majority Democrats in the House of Representatives, was approved by 236 votes to 189." Source Why are Republicans rejecting the Drilling Bill?
"The vote was 236 to 189 with most Republicans rejecting it. The reason they rejected it was because it prohibits exploration of known oil resources closer than 50 miles off the coasts and Gulf of Mexico. Cripes, allowing drilling 50 miles off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts wasn't good enough? What weasels. The bill now goes to the Senate where there are 3 alternative proposals. It's going to be an uphill road getting the 60 votes needed for passage. If the Congress does nothing by September 30th the current ban expires and drilling could take place as close as 3 miles offshore. That would be insane."

The Bill is loaded with proposals remarkably similar to Senator Obama's plans and the issues he's campaigned on, key proposals in the Bill should look familiar.
Key provisions of House energy bill:
_Opens federal waters beyond 50 miles from shore along the Atlantic and Pacific coasts to oil and gas drilling, ending drilling bans that have been in effect for 26 years. States would have to agree to drilling for areas between 50 and 100 miles from land.
_Rolls back $18 billion in tax breaks for the five largest oil companies and requires energy companies to pay billions of dollars in additional royalties from oil taken from the deep water areas of the Gulf of Mexico under questionable leases issued in the late 1990s.
_Requires the release of 70 million barrels of oil from the government's Strategic Petroleum Reserve to put more oil on the market and lower gasoline prices.
_Makes it a federal crime for oil companies holding federal leases to provide gifts to government employees, a response to a recent sex and drug scandal involving the federal office that oversees the offshore oil royalty program and energy company employees.
_Provides tax credits for wind and solar energy industries, the development of cellulosic ethanol and other biofuels, and purchase of plug-in gas-electric hybrid cars.
_Requires utilities to generate 15 percent of their electricity from solar, wind or other alternative energy sources.
_Gives tax breaks for new energy efficiency and conservation programs, including the use of improved building codes and low-interest loans for energy-efficient homes, and for companies that promote their employees use of bicycles for commuting. Source
The absolutely silly part about DRILL BABY DRILL is that the oil companies currently hold leases for 68 million acres offshore and they are NOT drilling.
Has anyone noticed the refineries are at capacity anyway? How will drilling more oil help when there are no refineries to clean the oil, cuz the oil companies are too busy pocketing their historic profits rather than investing in more refineries. My new mantra: REFINE BABY REFINE!
Funny how people swallow this drilling nonsense hook line and sinker without giving any thought to the above 2 issues at all.

Thanks so much for posting this clear and concise explanation of the energy bill! It makes so much sense and obviously represents a compromise. Perhaps their 'drill, drill, drill' theme was why the GOP'ers were reluctant to vote yes - because it took away their claims that the Dems were deliberately holding up energy help for the nation.
Approval of this bill has also taken away McCain's favorite mantra, the aforementioned, drill, drill, drill!
The Drill, Baby, Drill thing works for some reason. It's very neanderthal if you ask me, but I guess if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck....

So glad the Dems called their bluff. Now we can see how serious they are about actually fulfilling their promises.

Notice the time to market is conveniently ignored as well. 10-15 years just isn't a good selling point for the drones.
Capacity is the real underlying issue. Big oil does not want to build more refineries NOR do they want to turn over the power to the states in order to manage the drilling. No one wants to help Americans...just themselves.
