Yes, that happens quite often in the cities and villages In some villages we have had packs of wolves running on the streets and biting or killing dogs. We have also had wolves attacking people: a child was severely mauled in a village, and some of the people there scared the wolf, which in turn dropped the kid and ran. It was later killed by one of the villagers. A lady was mauled by another wild wolf about a year ago. I don't know of any humans being killed by wolves in Alaska, but at least one was killed in Canada last year.

You have to be aware, when you live in the bush or even just in a rural location, that your dog(s) can fall victim to different wild animals and other unsafe conditions. Just like in the city, you have to be aware of automobiles etc.

State biologists that knew in the month of JUNE that wolves would be raising young, and would under NO CIRCUMSTANCES DESERT THEIR DEN chose to ignore the law, and participate in what is know as "denning" – the killing of wolf young in the den. This practice is PROHIBITED under Alaska law.

Sarah Palin needs to NOT look the other way when the law is broken just because she sanctions this practice.

Got it.

Thanks Obama supporters, you've really cleared up my moral compass!

Where the heck is PETA/ACLU when you need them?

Wolves go through the outskirts of Fairbanks, and kill dogs. Two years ago a woman musher lost a couple of her dogs. Last year we had several dogs eaten by wolves in North Pole. Pets make wonderful meals for wolves, specially pets that are well fed and tender. When i take my wife's dog for a walk around the areas were the wolves are seeing in North Pole, I always take precautions. The dog is always on a leash, and I am well armed.

All the vitriol on this thread . . .

I swear - you would think the headline was "Sarah Palin eats her own children alive" instead of a discussion about wolf population control.
Yes, and it all began with this:

And you know this because you are an Anthropologist?

I don't think that primitive people were thinking about controlling the populations of predators. I think they were more interested in eating that night, or finding shelter from the harsh environment.

Use the gray matter once in a while to think through a situation before you start espousing CRAP.
Just because someone told her something that she didn't want to hear and turned out not to be CRAP, at least not according to leading scientists of both the U.S. and Canada.

And it's partially illustrative of why aerial wolf hunting is still legal in Alaska. This sort of thing alienated the voters; they were sick of being shrieked at by outsiders. I do hope that when and if this comes before the voters again, these groups will develop a workable strategy, because they completely blew it and I think that it is quite fair to say that a few drops of that wolf blood landed squarely on the hands of PETA.

Barbie, I am sorry that you chose to misinterpret my comments about the Native American practice of denning to mean that I am a Repubnicant or whatever mutation you used, but I'm not the one at fault for that, am I? You have a worthy cause here; please do it the justice it deserves.

Ray, I used to hear them outside my cabin when I lived in the Su. I never let my dog out at night and we didn't go walking there the way we do elsewhere. In that respect, we both have much more freedom with regards to spending time in the outdoors here than we did out there.

Don't be silly. Frau Palin would never eat her own young...just yours or mine.
