Who was Corporal Kareem Rashad Sultan Khan? A US soldier killed in Baquba on August 6, 2007, after a bomb detonated while checking abandoned houses for explosives. He was a soldier in the Stryker Brigade combat team of the Army's 2nd Infantry Division, based in Ft. Lewis, Washington. He, like many of our young men and women enlisted in the military after the 9/11 attacks. According to his father, “He looked at it that he's American and he has a job to do."

Fast forward to today, Former Secretary of State, Colin Powell said that it’s un-American to even consider that being Muslim would bar someone from holding public office. However, there are those of us (you know who you are) that use terms of identification like Arab or Muslim as smears is as unpatriotic as it gets. Corporal Khan’s service is just one example of how Muslim Americans have contributed to this country, the same as the rest of us.

As a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, I applaud Secretary Powell for his leadership and candor. I also applaud the men and women in the armed forces. With the challenges this country faces, we can not have the divisiveness and fear-mongering displayed in the media. He reminded us that we are all Americans (regardless of religion, gender, political affiliation, etc.)

Well, wasn't Cpl Khan a Muslim? Didn't that fact make him a potential terrorist? If he were alive today and had showed up in McCain/Palin rallies, he'd probably be lynched by the Jesus-loving crowd. That woman who told McCain she feared Obama because he is an "Arab" would probably be among the lynch mob.

Good point. This is something certain right-wingers should keep in mind before they go on their next "mooo-slims and a-raaabs" rant.

marinesforcommonsense; Thanks for putting this up. I watched most of the Powell interview on MTP but didn't catch the young man's name. Too bad most of the morons who needed to hear his tale of this fine young American never will. They were too busy watching "Fox and Fiends" and learning that not only is Obama a terrorist, but that Powell was in on the planning of 9/11.

Religion, race or colour is not how you define a man or woman. Unfortunately there are many morons out there that do.

That is the basis of the extreme Republican right's popularity. Add in gays and guns, and you have a winner from their point of view.

We have thousands of our military personnel in Iraq and in Afghanistan. How can our military do there job of bringing peace and stability in these Muslim countries, if some leaders in the United States advocate hatred, malice, and suspicion towards Islam? If anything, it only brings question and suspicion in the minds of many Muslims and people around the world, as to why the United States military are there in the first place.

1. This is the kind of idiocy that provides the fuel and ammunition needed by the Bin Laden types out there.

2. This lack of foresight makes it easier for Al Qaeda to recruit and wage jihad against us.

3. This lack of common sense in turn makes our military subjected to more attacks and danger abroad.

By virtue of all this and such, one could ask or wonder who the actual real enemy of ours is…

The usual deafening silence from the racist neo-cons. No room for truth in that crowd.
