Besides picking the airhead Sarah Palin, the Republicans' biggest mistake was their move to antagonize urban and suburban voters. Think about it: most voters live in cities and suburbs. That's where most of the votes come from. By attacking these groups - labeling them "false Americans" - the GOP effectively sealed its own defeat. How stupid can the Republicans be? Whoever concocted this strategy of pandering to rural voters (a dwindling demographic) and hoping to win elections based on that must be the dumbest political strategist to ever walk on earth. You don't win elections by pi$$ing off large numbers of people, but that's exactly what McCain/Palin did.

The Republicans can have all the rural voters (so-called real Americans) they want. The Democrats, if they are smart, should cultivate their base among the urban and suburban crowd. That should ensure permanent victory.

In my opinion, rural voters will vote republican and city-dwellers will vote democrat. The suburbanites are the prized piece of a winning election and if you are going to isolate them, then you will lose.

I disagree.

By far the biggest problems Republicans made was supporting Bush to the hilt for the past 8 years...

They don't yet realize it, but over time they will.. they committed poltical-party-suicide with their support for Bush - and as a result they'll be a minority party for another 25 years at least... God willing...

What's the old saying? "Good riddance to bad rubbish!!!"

The biggest mistake is marginalizing Ron Paul.

Republican turnout was significantly lower. Think about it.

In an election where the sitting President had such a low rating and the stock market tanking 1 month from election day, there was nothing the Republicans could have done to win this.

In football, its called a punt. The Dems now have the ball pinned deep in their own end and we'll see if the Repubs can get the ball back in 4 years.

Well I don't know if Ron Paul would have rallied the base but he did have a strong youth movement in the primaries. He atleast could have competed with this group against Obama. I would have considered voting for Paul over Obama actually.

It wasn't a good move (the whole "real Americans" thing), but I feel people already had their minds made up well before that.

Sarah Palin was the biggest mistake. I know a number of people, including me, who probably would have voted for McCain until he picked her.

Where do you get this stuff?

People voted on the bases of the economy and the perception of the war.

Nothing more.

Right. McCain and Palin really took the high ground during their campaigning. Fear-baiting, race-baiting, hate-mongering. Nah, didn't matter to anybody.
