Forget that it was the May 4th...

Why would an acting US president celebrate the day of Mexico's defense against an invading French Army?

Should we expect him to eat crepes in July to celebrate Bastille Day?

Should she sip vodka in February to honor Red Army Day?

How about some good ole' maple syrup for Canada Day on July 1st?

All these seem reasonable. We should all celebrate Cinco de Mayo because it was another victory in the fight against European colonial domination of North and South America.

It's simply PR. Yes, we will expect him to celebrate Christmas even though some Americans don't.

To encourage residents of DC to go to restaurants today. Restaurant reservations had been way down, now they are back to normal. Or at least closer to being back to normal. The Obamas set an example that a few cases of swine flu in DC should not make people too terrified to go out.

By the way they went to Citronelle and ordered lobster (michelle) short ribs (barack) and martinis. Not really a "cinco de mayo" tribute. But it was certainly good timing--local restaurants needed to get full houses today, and now they have them. They're happy to see this example set.

I would expect him to celebrate Christmas, because he is Christian.

I would not expect him to celebrate Cinco de Mayo, because he's not Mexican. This is a celebration of another nation's military accomplishment...

I celebrate Cinco de Mayo and I don't care anything about Mexico except for their food. Any reason to have a good meal is harmless fun. I think Friday is Cinco De Ocho, BTW. Cinco de Mayo, that was when General santa Ana surrendered Mexico to Texas, right?

Guess you forgot about the Whitehouse Seder. Also St. Patrick's Day, when they dyed the whitehouse fountain green.

Cinco de Mayo is not really celebrated in Mexico. It's a minor event there. It's a major event for Americans with Mexican heritage. The President is right to celebrate it along with the large fraction of the population for which it has much meaning. He had a seder dinner, for christ sake. Did you post a comment then?

I took my kids this weekend for our local event - great food, great music, fun people. Why not?

Anybody who asks a question like this is suspect.

That's exactly the point.
Sounds to me like the OP has a bit of a Mexico-bashing agenda.
