Not so for Buck. He got caught in a time warp and was transported several hundred years into the future! He arrived there with no experience regarding piloting a starship and yet was able to pick up on the new technology and flight controls in a matter of 2 or 3 episodes to become one heck of a space fighter pilot. Now that is one smart and capable individual folks!!!
Or......perhaps the teaching and learning technologies of the 25th century were a vast improvement from his time.

I mean, their robotics and space travel vastly improved; why not their schools as well?

Then Picard gets my vote, for his actions against the Borg. I'm not familiar with some of the people on your list, like the Battlestar Galactica, but I don't see anyone else on there with the all around leadership skills Picard possessed.

As for my personal favorite? Han Solo, but if our survival against an alien race was up to him, we might as well just flip a coin for whether we'll live or die.

I bet Obama prefers Picard over Kirk as well.
Actually I take that back. If he could choose from the OP's list, and knowing how important race is to him, he would choose Cisco.

BTW - You had better be careful Stan4, lest Texas remove you from their state for choosing Picard.
What an incredibly idiotic post. You don't think a woman can weigh in on this topic? Or that a Texan can't choose Picard? We don't all drive jacked up trucks with gun racks and go to rodeos on the weekends.

I'm from TX, and I choose Picard. Kirk would have been annihilated by the Borg, he's not smart enough to outthink them, and holds no advantage over them in technology to exploit by going in "guns blazing."

Kirk was a swashbuckling type of Captain. If you've watched the films, you'll see he disdained ever becoming an Admiral, he knew he wasn't cut out for it. Picard made a great Captain AND could also easily be an Admiral or higher... he sees the big picture.

Now if you want the fate of the galaxy and our race to rest on the shoulders of a guy who's all about action and no thinking (while screwing every blue skinned alien along the way) then more power to you, but it's a fools argument.

Picard.

Perhaps the main reason I didn't choose Kirk is that, unlike in the original Star Trek series, I don't expect an invasion by a powerful alien force to be resolved by fistfights.

I put Han Solo, since he and Chewie were not really statists or militaristic. Of course I'm a libertarian, so naturally my vote goes to Han Solo.

LOL Exactly.

A vote for Kirk is like saying that Adam West was the best Batman. Both are way too campy. Shatner's overacting alone rules him out haha

First of all, where is the woman comment coming from

Secondly, while I did not mention trucks, rodeos, or guns as it relates to Texans, I find it funny that you did.
Maybe thou protests too much because you fear those generalizations might have some truth to them?

I just got back from Texas (have been there plenty of times), and rest assured there are plenty of the things you said and more as it relates to the people of Texas. Now don't get me wrong as I like the people I know, and generally the typical person is friendly proved you are in kind.
Still very few places in this country have people wearing cowboy hats, boots, bolo ties, drive jacked up trucks, etc.,etc., like they do in Texas.

As to the theme of the thread, yes, Texas is stereotyped as a place where a mans man resides, and they do not "take a liking to sissy boys" like Picard.
Like it or not, the modern writers of Star Trek made a more mealy mouthed, almost asexual, self reflective character in Picard. The only testosterone Picard had was what he absorb by being close to Riker.

He also was Borged and killed most of his fellow Star Fleet comrades. Kirk typically only lost one crewman per episode, and you always knew who it was based on the color of his uniform when they beamed down to the planet surface. So Kirk may have lost 80 or so Star Fleet guys, where Picard killed 80,000 or so in just a few days. Yeah, we really want Picard protecting us against alien invasions. With protectors like that, who needs enemies.

Heck Picard is French of all things. Need I say more?
